Hf trailer wheel conversion question

Might pick up a harbor freight trailer today at a sale....it has the four lug wheels....what do I need to do to convert it to five lug like whats on my jeep

I believe the answer is either wheel spacers, which I'm not sure you can get for that 4-bolt application,

or, new hubs. I think hubs would probably run you ballpark $50/ea. But I could be wrong.

I'd get a new 5 lug 48" axle and then run adapters if needed. The HF axle is not all that sturdy and the bearings are only available from HF if I remember correctly. Withthat being said I wore out three sets of tires towing mine around and never had a single problem.

Today HF is having a 25% off any one item. So today would be a good day to go buy one.

Even if you change the hubs out to 5 on 4.5" hubs, your axle is still not really wide enough for anything other than the 4.8x8" (or 12") tires that are mounted on 4" wide rims. With these tires, you've only got about 1.5" space between the edge of the tire and the frame of the trailer.

They do make a 175/80/13" trailer tire that Walmart sells on a 4-bolt rim that might fit (clearance wise between the edge of the tire and the trailer frame). It's a little taller than what your trailer will come with.

Really your main options if you're wanting to run Jeep tires are to either buy a wider axle, or narrow the trailer frame. Check out my HF trailer build; it might help you.

This next thread might also interest you if you're thinking about modifying a HF trailer frame. It's a bit long, but what he did to the HF frame is really cool, and it allowed him to use the factory HF axle and still put wider Jeep rims and tires on it.

Axis 1 574 266 8282 ask for H150 for the 5 lug hubs. if you run matching aluminum wheels you will probably need 2" spacers so the center cap fits back in 1.75" (from my local wheel store) isn't enough. O1 wrangler is 61" hub face (-4" for spacers) and 42" inches for the spring perches.

Thanks guys....

Yes was looking at the 25% sale.....but they did not have any in stock so decided to hold off.

Good threads and have scoured them pretty well. Thanks for the info....I may just keep saving for a project some one got tired of on an hf frame

I'm kind of late to this thread, but I picked up a 2000 lb axle that is 58" WMS to WMS, and has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern at Orscheln's for $95. Their cost was $105, but I found an online coupon for 10% any one item and used that. I went with all of their suspension components too, but I'd assume you could use the HF stuff other then having to do something with the spring perch mounts.
