I didn't know this until now, but Delorme has been bought out by Garmin. I like the Freedom plan that lets you use it when you need it. $15/month.

Why I moved out of AZ, don't do well in the heat... at least it is only kind hot here on 2 months out of the year, instead of 6.

Spot had a device that you could link your cell phone to send text messages, but they quit carrying it for some reason... I was just going to that. oh well. Don't care for the preprogrammed messages, I am discovering.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I would love to use the buddy system but none of my friends are into overlanding and exploring quite like we are. Maybe I'll do a group run sometime.

Anyways, thanks again. I'll keep up with the maintenance and not be a wimp and just go explore. Also, I'm going to look into a SPOT or something similar.

Yeah, I go solo mostly... wasn't until a few months ago I found a riding buddy here in the new locale...though the last couple times we have been out it has been brutal. I tend to take it a lot easier when I ride by myself, 2nd time out with him it took is 10 hours to go 50 miles with endless blow downs and washed out creek crossings...and cost me $500 in parts, last time, thought I was going have to medevacced out to get an IV....he might be cursed...ha ha!
