High Mileage?

So tomorrow I am looking at a 2000 D2 with 140K. I know for the most part what to look out for as outlined in here and/or other forums. However, what I wanted to know was if I would be close to the end of the lifespan of a D2 (engine, transmission, electronics, etc) at some type of high mileage? I currently have a Cherokee and I know that the 4.0 I6 can go at least 300K miles easily.

There is that 2000 with 140K - $3800.

That's what I want to know about the D2, at what mileage do I have to worry AGAIN about simple engine tasks and maybe even large things like head gaskets, etc? Hope I make sense?

I dunno dude, those are high mile trucks. Those prices are are on the higher end, too.

I haven't heard of many Rover V8s running much higher than those numbers without significant work. I know there're a couple dudes on here with ~180k miles or so on their trucks, let's see what they say. Rebuilt engines are pretty common on Rovers so don't let that scare you away as long as it's documented by a reputable shop.

You can get a nicely built D1 with similar mileage for $3k-$4k.

Of those I'd probably go for the '99. If the rebuild is legit and the drivetrain checks out and you can get it for $3k, not a bad deal. You're gonna be fixing little stuff constantly anyway, so 150k on the body versus 180k isn't a big difference, IMO, as long as there isn't any rust.

There is a guy on here looking for a DII as well, and he checked those first two -- I believe- and they did not live up to the expectations.

I wanted a 2004, and as much as I would love to get one and maintain one, I am a college student that loves to off road, so buying an early D2 cash is my only option (because I like Land Rovers and no I won't buy a Toyota for college). This way I can have money to maintain it and put gas rather than paying it off, trying to maintain it, and fighting for gas money.

You'll find one. It's a lot easier if you're willing to fly somewhere and drive it back, though.

And check in with Dale (Rovertrader) every now and then and see what he's got in the oven.

Dale has a 5 speed DII that I love but not in the budget unfortunately. Yes I am very keen on wanting only a DII haha. With the budget in place though, I am looking at the 140K one tomorrow. 2nd owner, bought from CarMax, etc. I am thinking early DII is the way for me if I can find the right one..

140k isnt bad if it was taken care of. Those motors can go longer. It may need some work, depending on how it was taken care of. Service records and a prepurchase inspection by someone who knows Rovers are your "friends". If you can find an extended warranty that will write a contract for you at a good price, then even better.

Open your search up to 500 miles or more and drive one home. Hell I bought a 91 RR in Albuquerque, NM sight unseen (well plenty of detailed pictures), jumped on a Southwest flight and drove it home to Tulsa. That was almost 2 years ago.

Anyone know where I can find a Rover Specialist in Miami? I have not seen a Rover place yet, but I might be wrong. So no service records would be a deal breaker? I'm seeing it later today just wondering.

I would like to buy one home, but it is just that fear of breaking down or something that scares me. We'll see.

Got it. Will definitely take whatever DII I am most interested in to get it checked out by him. Thanks again for the shop man! I never knew there was one that close by.

I am the guy Nashvillerover mentioned. I am in Miami as well, and have been looking for a DII for a while and have gone back and forth on what I wanted. I was looking at 04s almost exclusively because of the things mentioned elsewhere on this forum. I have a bit more of a budget so I was looking at lower mileage examples, even considering early model LR3s. I have the number of a shop that does LRs. I will PM you his info, he is in Medley. Nice guy, though he talked about LR3s as being one of the most problematic Rovers, and I might go against his advice and buy one anyway.
