Quick question, I'm looking for some advice on getting a print made. Curious as to what the best and most cost effective way is. I've found the file online in the Archival Research Catalog of the national archive. Civil war era, black and white and 1400x1100 pixels. Is this enough for fairly large print worthy of framing?

Thanks guys

If you're asking how big a print you can make with a 1400x1100 pixel image, That, I'm not sure.

If you're asking where to have a quality print made for a reasonable price, try Costco. They even offer printer profiles so as long as you're regularly calibrating your monitor, the output the provide will be very accurate.

I've had many large prints made there (11x13 IIRC).

HTH.

I used Costco before I starting using Elevator. The results were really good for a standard print lab, and the best part as you say, you can get printer profiles for many of their outlets.

I received my first 4X6 sample pack yesterday. The sample pack is definitely a great way to see the different finish options before investing in larger prints.

To me the Glossy worked best for my landscape shot and helps the image pop.

The satin softened it a bit too much for me but would look good for portraits.

The sheer finish which lets a lot of the silver luminescence shimmer through is pretty cool and changes significantly depending on the lighting and angle of view. On my sample the white areas were a bit speckled but that may be a result of the finish option. I plan to try a darker landscape image to see if it works better. This finish gives the image an ever changing metallic appearance which could be nice on the right landscape shot.

For now my choice would be the high gloss finish.

BTW. Bay Photo is having a 50% off special for the thin metal print sample pack that is offered through 3/31 (4 more days). If you were considering ordering a sample pack now's the time.

Does anyone else think that the order/upload process for the Bayphoto is not the most confusing thing on the internet?

I could probably do a heart transplant quicker than I could figure out how to upload a simple photo and figure out which type of product I want.

I've tried twice now on different occasions and each time I get too frustrated and shut it down:mad:

I downloaded their Bay ROES Economy software which I then use to drag and drop my photos onto their order template. It still is bit confusing but once I went through it once I can now step through the order process easily using that interface.

I just ordered two more sample packs this morning. :sombrero:

Some good info here, I'll have to check them out and play with their software a bit. I was looking for some printing processes similar to this a little while back and couldn't find them.

Resurrecting an old thread to say that I love these aluminum prints. I've done 10 or so of them now, in lots of sizes. I don't think I will go back to paper prints ever. These prints remind me of the old Kodak Cibachrome prints I used to get from slides. Slightly more luminous than paper. I love the floating mount. Very clean.

Check this option out. If it's for a wall hanger, it's beautiful and suposed to be very durable long term.

I agree. If you have an image you want to really pop and plan to keep around awhile the metal prints are amazing.
