hitch mount tire carrier

I have a custom made one too. Still has the hitch available. Also has 2 jerry can holders. Other things could be attached as well.
In order for the carrier to sit tightly inside the hitch receiver, if needs to have a mechanism to lodge it in place.

That looks good. How heavy is it?

you cant have everything. a hitch extension like that halves your towing capacity

That is true.

Now, that I think about it, I might not need the tire carrier when i am towing my trailer. I might be able to throw the tire up in the roof basket or put it in the bed of my truck. May just need the tire carrier for when the bed and basket are full.

I have a Tiregate very simple yet well made product. Shipping cost is where it gets costly. I picked mine up in LA so no shipping $400. Very good product smart and simple design. Northern CA it was $500 retail due to thr whole shipping and 3rd party retailer taking their cut.

Which tiregate do you have? How heavy is it?

I will try and snag some close ups this weekend. Basically I just drilled a hole and welded in a 5/8 coupler nut. The used 2x2x0.250 angle to build a u shaped cradle off the hitch bar. Then bolted on an upper "L" shaped bar with a hitch pin to hold it upright. The the end of the L has a tire plate welded too it with wheel studs.

As for the weight the carrier is lite but the tire and gas is not. Around 150lbs all loaded up.

I also had an issue with the carrier taking up my hitch. So I had a bumper built with 2 extra receivers. One for recovery, one for a tow hitch and one for the tire carrier.

My Subaru is 200lbs trust me 300lbs isnt much when your setting up a tire carrier. I used my Tiregate on the 93LC. Kept the gate given all the locals wanted it for free. So keeping it for my next project;-)

I would say my carrier is about 90-100 plus 33" tire and 3 Jerry's, guesstimate to be around 170-190 lbs.

I would be surprised if a 33" tire plus rim weighs less than 80#. Most 33" tires alone are 50-60. I think your guesstimate may be low unless you're not including the fuel in your total. Or do you mean spare plus cans = 170-190?

You're probably right, the spare alone is definitely about that. And I meant to say 2 Jerry's not 3. I'd still guesstimate the weight to be no more than 200lbs total. My tongue weight is rated at 500, so even if it is heavier, still not a concern.

there is no way you are 200 loaded.

250-300 is my guess
if they are 5 gallon cans, 10 gallons of fluid is 84 lbs. plus the can weight.
