Hitch mounted platform for roof tent

I didn't see this mentioned on ExPo. An interesting idea. A hitch mounted roof tent platform. I contacted the company and this was the reply for my FJ.

Thank you for your interest! We currently are offering our hitch mounted BaseCamp as well as our BaseCamp T (Trailer Unit). All of our products are made out 6061-T6 aluminum. We would recommend that you check your vehicles tow capacity and trailer receiver rating so we would know which of our units would best suit you.

As far as pricing goes, our standard units including tents start at $3600 with 5 standard colors to choose from. In order for us to begin making your unit, we require a $500 deposit (Credit Card, Check, Money Order) with the remaining balance due before receiving your unit. Lead time on our units is 30 days.

As far as your question regarding how it attaches, the BaseCamp rests on a hitch plate that goes into a 2 inch receiver. The rails at the bottom of the BaseCamp allow the hitch plate to center itself when backing up your vehicle. The jacks allow the unit to be lifted or lowered from the hitch plate.

As far as an FJ Cruiser, we would recommend a BaseCamp without the storage boxes OR the BaseCamp T (Trailer Unit).

Looks like a pretty nice idea, I would be seriously concerned with having that much weight on the rear end (especially since the company fails to mention the weight on their webpage)!

Pretty cool. Like how you can leave it at base camp. Don't trust a hitch that much tho. Says its aluminum so it could be light and most the weight is the RTT

Cascadia Vehicle Tents is working on something similar right now. I don't think its a receive hitch carrier, but they teased a couple photos on Instagram.

Awesome idea, poor execution. That thing adds nearly 150# to the roof, still requires a rack to mount it on, and costs as much as your average non-boutique RTT. There's got to be a lighter/cheaper way since most users wouldn't be occupying the RTT when it wasn't attached anyways (presumably out on a trail run or into town for more beer). This one's bombproof when bombproof probably isn't necessary.

Make it out of aluminum, use smaller tubes, and slap one of those CYA legal stickers on it telling the user not to occupy the RTT when deployed.

Holy Departure Angle Batman! Might as well just have a 2WD truck, since you won't be doing much 4wheeling getting to the camp site with that hanging off the back.

Interesting idea for sure but I guarantee you will see flashing lights of a FHP cruiser in your rearview mirror if you'd try taking that on the road where I live.

Looks heavy not sure what the use would be for that. Dirt bikes in the back of the truck? Which case just build a slightly taller rack over the bed and slip the ATV or bike under it with your weight shifted over the rear axle and forward etc.

This makes more sense but the big advantage to the RT's is the fast set up and tear down once you go to this type of thing your sorta loosing the whole point of an RT. Which case only big advantage is avoiding having to tow a trailer and you can leave the RT set up while running into town for Ice Cream with the kids.

Good afternoon Yarjammer.

Thank you. We wish it could be that easy. The purpose of the Base Camp Rack was to give folks the option to be able to setup and leave their camp without having to break it down each time they wanted to leave. Customers have been asking for an option just like this, so we now offer one.
* Yes it might be over built but we would rather be safe than sorry. (we are working on other styles and material also)
* It only weighs 102 lbs. 85 of that is up on top where the bolts and braces are in bag in your rig.
* This is a great alternative still to pulling a trailer around. You can set up and sleep up there and still head out and hit the trails without all the added weight on top of your vehicle. Even just a rtt would be nice to leave sometimes when you are on trails.
* We know this will not be for everyone but it will be for someone.

Kind regards,

Bobby

Meh, cannot imagine a scenario where this makes more sense than sleeping in the back of that truck... or in a $99 tent on the ground... or on a cot with a rain fly... maybe stranded in a Neiman Marcus parking lot? weird.

As a long time RTT owner and user, there's a part of this that appeals to me, but here are the reasons who I would not buy this unit.

1) I spent 1300 on a high clearance rear bumper so I can camp where non lifted trucks can't get to. The departure angle would kill me

2) I don't trust the hitch with something that heavy and tall. Assuming I don't use the storage, and figure the non deployed height is 3'. My RTT is 120 with bags in it, then we start talking about 360 lb ft of rotational force for every little bump. Take it on the trails I like to go on and it could be much more than that. Im just not comfortable with that.

But this does get me brainstorming. What if I pulled my tailgate off, then slid the unit in the bed, and secure it with the hitch. This would alleviate all of my prior concerns and opens up side cabinetry options. Quick connect/disconnect for duel battery setups, places to mount my existing fridge/stove combo slide, and a lot more. The only problem I see is mounting a license plate to it, as the unit would cover most vehicle plates.

They make dirt bike hitch mounts. So I'm sure those would be fine.
