Home made AT trailer

I decided to build a hunting/camping trailer. I wanted a smallish light trailer to pull behind my 100 series LC. I will use it most of the time for hauling hunting stuff back and forth to the deer lease. I will be putting my CVT tent on top. Here is a sketch up of the design.Adventure trailer - Copy.jpg

Frame

I began by welding up the frame to the dimensions on the drawing. Hardest part was the tongue. It was hard to get it square in both directions. I had to use the stairs to the hay loft for support while using the level to get is all squared up.

Sides

Here is one of the long sides welded up and sitting on the frame. You can see all three of my inspection crew members :D

I have a question about axle width. I want to make sure I get it right so I order the correct axle. Here are the measurements
Frame is 40" wide....so 38" to the center of the frame(center of springs).
I plan on running tundra wheels that are OEM and they have 6.2" of back spacing and are 8" wide.(60mm positive offset)
The tires will be 265 which are 10.4" wide.
Sooooo axle width should be 40+6.2+6.2+2.4(tire width minus rim width)+2.4+ clearance for tire to side of trailer say 2" per side?
Grand total 61.2" .....axle should be 61" tire mounting plate to tire mounting plate.....
What say you?

I would go another inch on each side. The axle teeter totters and the tires may possibly rub the tub. Better to be safe than sorry. But I have not used an axle like that in a long time. so I could be all wet on that. I know big tires and big rocks make for a lot of movement.

Sounds like a plan.... Are you using torsion axles?

"TheThom
That math sounds right to me"

Thank you

Tailgate hinge

I got a couple of bullet style hinges for the tail gate. Is this how most of you guys weld them on?

RTT raising idea

Here is another Sketch up with the lid and RTT added. The idea here would be to use a scissor jack placed on the plate on the lid of the trailer. Use the jack to raise the RTT and then pin the sliding tubes in each of the corners. I could remove the scissor jack and be able to open the lid of the trailer. good idea? improvements?
Reasoning.........I have a RTT with a annex and without raising the RTT I could not use the annex.

Just curious, if your RTT rack was built at the full height, what do you think would be the disadvantage(s)?
The disadvantages as I see it would be top heavy trailer, more likely to tip over, and more wind resistance, The platform for the RTT would be about 6'5" tall (when extended)so if the tent was say 18 inches when folded on top of platform then total height would be about 8'. With the adjustable platform normal trailer height would be close to 4'6" or to the top of the tent(when folded) approx 6'2".

update

Here are some pics of axle installed, rest of the box finished, lid on with bullet style hinges. Just a note....I put a little space between the lid and the box when welding on the hinges to allow for weather stripping. Next up....finish nose area then finish box and lid with 16g or 18g steel.
