One last pic of that to give you an idea of how simple it is. If you can build a roof rack, you can build your own gutter mounts. :)
Nice work on the gutter clamps, they look like at least 14 gauge steel. The way the gutter is sandwiched is clever.
It might have been a Safety Devices rack that you borrowed the clamp idea from.

I built what I like to call "The Redneck Rack"

I needed the roof rack when I was moving, and I didn't have time to go to my local steel supplier, cut, measure, weld, make it pretty, etc... So I just grabbed some 2x4's and 1x2's and built a rack in under 30 minutes. All I need to do is replace the warped 1x2 on the drivers side and I'll be stylin'

Man - that doesn't even look like wood!

are you using regular or treated?

Regular, just because it was supposed to be temporary

I spray painted it ODG to match the truck, I've amazingly got nothing but good feedback about it - so I just never took it off.

Well, you did a great job so I thought I'd look to see if I could find any other wooden ones out there.

I found a cool one that is part metal and part wood.

Looks like it would be right at home on a Woody or a Tickford Station Wagon.

I'm wanting to trim Grover out as much as possible in a classic safari/expedition type fashion.

I wonder if something along those lines would help.

Great posts here. I am considering having a roof rack built for my truck and this has given me some good ideas.

Thanks,

This homemade rack, from the streets of Paris in November 2009, has always been one of my favorites.

Home Made Roof Rack

I did not want a full on roof rack and it needed to be low profile so it would still fit in my garage. So I made 4 roof bars out of 1/8" steel. I can install the cross bars by my self 1 at a time then drop the roof top tent on when I need it. The Thule box will also clamp to these.

Nice design and low profile. Keeping it manageable by one person is key for me as well. I opted to simply use 4 sets of 58" Yakima cross bars on their gutter mount Q Towers purchased used on Craigslist from 2 sources and under $200 total. Use of the factory rails was out of the questions as they easily tear out of the roof when loaded. The bars allow for a canoe, bikes, gear or other bulky items. A lightweight removable flat deck is in the future but haven't come up with a solution for that yet. Still looking.
