Homebuilt wedge/toy hauler

After seeing all the information on homebuilt wedge campers I thought I would give it a try, I thought we could do better than my version 1 know as 'The Tarper'.

I knew I wanted all aluminum and I got lucky and scored an "L" shaped extrusion at the scrap yard that would work for my idea, I built a 2" angle frame to top the extrusion


The lid was made from 1x2x.120 aluminum with 1x1x.120 wall for the cross bar supports



installed the .080 aluminum with blind rivets and riveted the base together with 3/16 aircraft rivets








at this point I started on the 1x3x.062 wall rectangle steel tubing

Starting on the doors, ended up making the hinges as I was unable to find affordable ones






the wedge lid extended


here is the toy hauler part, the wedge lid closed and the wedge body extended so I can ride my 4 wheeler into the bed





today was the first time loading the 4 wheeler, worked perfect.

checked to see if I could get into the bed with the atv loaded, possible, not easy

Does your back have any dowels or locking for the top when its down? Or are the sides stiff enough to not spread?

The rear has a spreader bar the bolts in to tie the sides together, took the camper out this weekend and learned that I need to add dowels or other alignment device so the top stays aligned, my rear door hinges with the top (not pictured) and when it shifted on rough roads the door had alignment issues.

Not sure of your dimensions once it all closes up. Could you accomodate a moto with need for 50" in height when loaded and transporting?

with my current set up I have 45" to the bottom of my bed platform ( my atv requires 43") when I planed for my needs I figured if I got a taller atv I could always stack the bed platforms or pull the movable part of the bed all the way to the rear of the canopy leaving room for the handle bars to sit between the bed sections and this would give me 52" to the bottom of the lid. If one needed additional clearance you could build the canopy taller to meet your needs, I tried to keep the top as close to the cab as possible and still meet my needs.

Thanks, still has a long way to go, I have been watching your build, my son would like to do a flatbed version of your build.
