Homemade Rear Swing Out Bumper build

My stock bumper was dented badly, and I wanted a solid place to put my spare and some 20L fuel/water cans with good recovery points. There are bolt on options available for my truck but I knew I could do it myself.

The main tube is 3x4 1/4 wall, everything else is 2x2 3/16 wall. The multi-pattern tire mounting plate and the spindle is from ruffstuff. The spindle is welded top and bottom of the main tube. Standard Destaco latch and I welded on some small pieces of pipe to the swing out and the main tube to drop a bolt through to hold the swing open.

To mount the bumper to the truck I took a ton of measurements, drew a design in CAD, and had a local steel supply house cut it out of 3/4 plate. Those plates extend all the way through the main tube to create ideal recovery points that pull directly inline with the frame.

Next up I need to make the basket for the fuel/water cans and I'm going to add a stainless drop down table for food prep.

Painting it was a very rushed project because we were leaving the next day for a trip, but it did get properly primed and three coats of black marine paint.

I modified a off the shelf Jeep JK tire plate mount to work with my carrier. Just cut the Jeep bolt pattern off and welded the bracket to my tire plate. Still need to run the light wires, but it works better than zipties

Nice! Beefy, so it should outlast the truck.
Now just add a pair of slotted shelf brackets to the back side of the rack so you can bend up some shelf arms and modified them to hook into a 2 burner Coleman Stove.
It will give you a dedicated place to cook on and maximize the use of the flat tailgate.

I will start a thread in a bit on my mod to show you what I found works best. And some of the other add ons to enhance my swing out tire carrier kitchen.kitchen. Need to take some better pictures to show it all.

Finished up the jerry can holder and the table. Bumper is working great so far. I haven't gotten a picture of the table flipped out and everything working yet but you can see the stainless in front of the tailgate.

Looks good. One thing to keep an eye on: The way you've installed that draw-latch may create the potential for problems long-term. The latch is designed to pull in the direction along the axis of the handle when closed (Vertically, in your case). So basically your latch will be great at pulling the swing-arm down towards the bumper, but less optimal at preventing the arm from swinging in/out.

Keep an eye on it for wear, etc.

Right, I did it that way because that's what ruffstuff recommended to keep the spindle from breaking. They warned that if any up and down movement was allowed the vibration over time would cause a failure. Right now it doesn't move at all, but if I build another one I'd do it differently. I have to have the latch adjusted silly tight for it to lock in place.
