Typical end mills are flat. So if it's a 1/2" end mill, it's making a 1/2" cut as soon as it contacts the work. A center punch MIGHT work with a ball end mill but I wouldn't put money on it. A jobber type drill bit or a step bit are going to be way easier for hand work. Cheaper too.I didn't think about that. Would a center punch not make enough of a notch in the steel to hold the end mill in place?
