I am wrapping up my own DepHep style rack like Rev posted a few pages earlier. It is for a 1st Generation Xterra with a sunroof. It will go from just behind the front wind fairing to the rear of the roof rails.

I plan to light mine just like Rev did. He has done a great job. http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17924&highlight=dephep
Hope Rev doesn't mind me posting his wiring thread.

Speaking of.....Paul was telling me about your new mounting feet and rack setup. I'd sure love to see that sometime.

For sure, it turned out really clean. The prototype feet are at the powder-coater, I'll get them back tomorrow and then start my experimenting with the rubber coating. I'm beyond pleased with the results and the final product. We had two adults standing up there with no noticeable deflection at all

Forgot I had this one on my old '85 pickup. It was welded directly to the roll cage. The rear part of the cage however was removable. The main hoop directly behind the cab was welded to the flatbed with tabs across the top where the runners and rear hoop portion were attached. By removing the rear part of the cage/rack, I could still have an open flat deck to carry larger objects if necessary.

Simple 1" tube for the rack with expanded metal floor.

This photo shows the attachment point for the rear of the cage. You can see the mounts on the main hoop and also the bottom of the rear legs that unbolted from the flatbed.

I actually saved that picture off Pirate years ago when I was thinking about getting a truck to wheel. The only other bed set up I liked more was Camo's old first gen with the rail boxes down the sides.

Not at all. Thanks for the compliment!

Rev, can you show some more pictures of the rack? I think I really like that, but it's hard to see the rack itself. I've been wanting to build a rack that works with the factory 2.5" tubes on my Land Rover, similar to what you have.

Sorry. I just noticed these posts. I don't know if I have any amazing pictures but I will see what I can find.

i have since modified the plug (and lifted the rear - looks so small!)

that is all I have. hope it helps.

cool idea's REV. I like the hi-lift mount. Also wondering how you are doing your wiring for all those lights?! I plan on doing lights on the sides as well, can't wait to see how yours turns out.

check out my build thread at thenewx, and if you have any questions just let me know. It is A LOT of work. But worth teh clean look.

Rev,

I noticed your front light bar with the 4 KC lights. Did you run the wiring under rack and down through the A pillar and down into the vehicle? Could you show your wiring for your front light bar?

Thanks

I ran the wires through the rear hatch and then through the rack to the front. There is a howto here: http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17744

Thanks. What's the deal with the hold down clamps?

Not sure what you mean. The rack sits on top of the stock rails. The brackets bolt on and clamp up underneath. It is a solid as I can imagine it ever needs to be. It never shifts or moves even with a heavy load up top. It is a very simple but good idea. Again, not my own design. :)

I just meant the details on the underside clamps. Are they just solid bar, bent to fit. Or something premade for an industrial application, etc?

I believe they are a solid bar bent to fit, not something you would buy off teh shelf. A PM to dephep at thenewx.org or whatever they call themselves now, would clear it up.

Here is my first roof rack I made for my old 1990 Jeep Cherokee. It mounted to the stock captured nuts in the luggage rack rails using the stock thumb screws from the cross bars.

I sold that one because I wanted to make one a little different and came up with the following design. I bought the rain gutter mounts from Garvin before they wised up and decided not to offer them as a seperate item. The ovals with my initial were laser cut and worked out sweet! The diamond plate was cut to follow the trailing curve of the oval, and the tails of the diamond plate were rounded as well. I really liked how this one tiurned out.

After looking at these pictures I just may build a roof rack for my K5 Blazer. What could I do for that one... Oh, by the way, the roof racks pictures above were bent with a Pro Tools 105 bender with a 1" square tube die.
