(hopefully) My new Land Rover 110

I am jumping the gun on this thread just a little..... but if the deal falls through at least we can all enjoy some landrover pics. I have been keeping an ear to the ground for a 110 or 109 LR for quite some time. Unfortunately I live in the boonies of west TX where LRs were/are not popular 4x4s. That makes this find even more mind-blowing.

the story:
I work for a sheriff's office in the rural tx panhandle. I was stuck doing a xport today... 8hr round trip. As I was driving through a small town approx 2hr from my house, out of the corner of my eye. I noticed the unmistakable stare of land rover headlights peeking out from behind a boat in a small shop/garage/old building. I immediately made a mental note of my location and decided to stop by on the way back through and take a closer look (obviously I can not stop with a prisoner in the car).

On the way back through (without prisoner) I stopped at the local store to fuel up. I asked some of the old men in the store if they knew the owner of the Land Rover...and as luck would have it, it was the cousin on of one of the guys in the store (god I love small towns). I asked if he knew if his cousin was looking to sell. He stated that, yes, his cousin was looking to sell. I gave the guy all my contact information (he stated he would pass along to his cousin) and then asked if I could run over the shop and snap some pictures. He said that would be no problem.

No idea on year. I have a tough time differentiating between land-rover series models but it looks vaguely reminiscent of a LR Perentie (with the flat nose, flat paint, pintle hitch, military style trailer plug, and slat grille) . The interior was packed with bits/pieces including the window uppers, soft top, what looked like a half-cab, and a few more cool parts.
The truck has license plates from Belize. No idea on title or anything at this point. It looks pretty much all there (especially the drivetrain).
The drive-train looked to be a 4spd mated to a 2.25 I4 diesel (assuming diesel due to no carburetor in the obvious locations and the presence of fuel lines routed to injectors). I am hoping the owner calls me and I can make it my own ASAP.

If you guys see anything noteworthy (good or bad) please speak up. The majority of my knowledge comes from ford diesels and early Jeeps (CJ2-CJ7). I have limited knowledge of all things land rover (outside of my basic research while searching for a 109/110).

I will keep this thread updated when (not IF) the owner calls *fingers crossed*

In the mean time, enjoy some of the eye candy of what will hopefully turn out to be my new project/labor of love.

Awesome find! Definitely an ex military 110. I would just assume there are probable engine issues due to it being laid up. I don't see any Texas registration stickers on the window or anything. If it came straight from Belize, I would double check the year (it looks like it should be 25 years or older).

Check out www.defendersource.com, it will answer a lot of the questions you are going to have about this.

Ex-MOD truck. Looks like it could have been ragged out.

Looks like it has a truck top in the back, that is good as that top looks like a civilian one. Incomplete without the rear lift tail gate (which can be rare).

The engine...meh. I mean, it'll go forever but is gutless. That said, its a prime candidate for a swap to a later engine (TDI 200 or TDI 300). However this engine is fine for piddling around town, off road, or the farm.

Double check to see if its a 5 speed. I "think" it should be. If it is a legit 4 speed, then it has an LT95 transmission/transfer case in it. Not as desirable as the 5 speeds.

Overall, this vehicle is most likely a 1983(ish) to 1990(ish).

If 24v, bypass. Too much of a hassle.

The bulkhead and frame condition is what really matters. If they are rusted, pass. More work than is worth.

If its actually in good condition and you can get it running for cheap, then go for it. Probably shouldn't pay over $20k for it, as you can get decent ones for that. The owner will probably reference pricing for a 5 door wagon, which is more desirable. Remind him that this is not a 5 door wagon and thus, does not demand a premium.

Ensure the door tops are there. Those are pricey.

Look at the bottom of the door, see if there is rust.

Check Defender Source for info on what to look for.

I agree with LR Max, with a couple of extra points.

The engine is the 2.5 NA (naturally aspirated, no turbo) so slow. The gearbox should be a five speed, probably an LT77. Ex British Army, I would suggest. It looks like it is painted Desert Sand over original green. Military headlight surrounds, or rather lack of them. Military larger lens sidelights and indicators. Military (usually) bonnet clamps. If the door tops are there they should be the two piece sliding variety (pricey). Military front bumper with towing pintle.

The hardtop is very likely added after disposal from the military and has the ribs on top so is commensurate with the age of the vehicle.

If there is any trace of the British military registration number, two numbers, two letters, two numbers, it can sometimes be possible to trace its' military history through the UK based Ex Military Land Rover Association.

Hope that helps.

i wouldn't pay more than 9k for it. It will be 24v if it hasn't been switched form military spec. The cosmetics is fairly easy. Check the frame and just assume you will be dropping in a 200tdi or some other engine. You can get a truck in better condition from England for about 10k and a fairly nice one from France or the Netherlands for like 20-ish. It is nice its LHD

Since you are in Texas I would probably make that into a softtop truck. ;)

Its left hand drive which makes a considerable difference in price on ex mod trucks. Witham's, the disposal depot that handles all ministry of defense sales gets appx 3k gbp more for a lhd truck than they do for a rhd. The dash parts and heater alone tend to go for $3k used. Given that its in Texas means it was imported and there will be a paper trail. The engine pictured is a 12v engine. The FFR (fitted for radio) trucks had additional 24v generators (not alternators) to power the radio equipment batteries.
This truck looks to have been a GS/general service truck. When you get contacted go back and look for rust in the footwells and on the chassis. Some of these trucks were used on beaches etc.

There should be a plate riveted to the right side of the seat box with build date and VIN
