The key is to over inflate the tires on the trailer to 50-60psi and then it will tow just fine on the highway/hardly noticeable.

Gears will make a world of a difference for you. I can pull my trailer at 75mph on cruise control with my 4.0l with 33's I have 4:56 gears. On the larger hills I can still do 55-60

Consider what originally towed the M416's, what they had for power and were geared, and go from there. :)

[H]ow big of engine you would need to pull a . . . [t]railer loaded to say 1000lbs.

The WWII military 1/4 ton trailers (Willys MBT, Bantam T3) weigh approximately 500 lbs. and are rated for an offroad cargo capacity of 500 lbs. A perfect 1,000 lb. example.

The correct answer to the original question, according to the U.S. Army in 1940:

134.2 c.i. making 60 bhp (54 net) @ 4,000 rpm and 105 ft. lbs. torque @ 2,000 rpm, in a 2,315 lb. 4wd vehicle with 4.88 gears and 6:00x16 tires.

How is this going to negate the effects of gravity when pass climbing?

Lack of resistance = more hp, plain and simple. It is not perfect but "helps" -- I suggest people try it. It has made a world of difference in my experience as I towed my trailer with a 135 hp 1989 Toyota V6 "3.slow" at a cool 12 mpg when towing...

Gearing, all the other suggestions definitely help, but this is a quick/easy one. The same is true for any trailer, no matter how much HP you have...

Wonder what top speed would of been on that little go getter pulling that 1000 lbs load?

About 45 mph. 50 with a tail wind. With or without a trailer.

My family had a four banger jeep when I was a kid. Bantam trailer too. I remember getting nowhere fast, but always getting there.

I think sometimes things would be allot better at a slower pace again. 50 mph on the freeway here in San Diego gets you used as a speed bump! LOL.
