How do Monteros Stack Up Against Isuzu Troopers?

I think the oil consumption issues were rectified on the later engines. The GM transmission has its issues, but as mentioned above, fixable. Isuzus and Monteros in the models you are inquiring about are similar suspension wise. I would suggest driving good examples of both and see what feels good to you. I will say here in Southern California there are more Monteros than Troopers. Can't say if that reflects sales or reliability.

Here the first Gen Troopers were everywhere, Monteros practically non existent. Second generation, a total flip flop with Monteros for the win. Go figure.

My mom had 1997 rodeo and she did zero maintenance to that thing except changed the oil every 3,000 ish miles. That thing never stranded us and was a beast in the Michigan winters. I ended up with it when it near its end and loved it. It had a bad head gasket and the salt pretty much ate the frame away but it still kept going. One day I went to put it into 4 high and it never came out. That thing leaked oil and most the time I checked the oil when my mom had it it was two quarts low and it still made it 179,000 miles. I know the trooper is a little different but alot of the parts are the same. I would but one in a second . hell Scott Brady here had one and loved it.
