How do you use HAM in an Emergency?

Sounds great! So far the 21st looks good for me although in my life that's a long time away. Lets see if we can make it that saturday. Maybe even for a bite to eat and talk Ham. Jim.

Nathan, sounds like an exciting trip. I have been in those situations on several occasions, all in the pre SPOT and HAM era, for me at least. Sounds like the bases were well covered.

There is usually very little need to speak with emergency aircraft if they have you in their sight. No need to help them land, find a landing site or give wind direction or any of that. As you know they can and will guide ground crews in if need be. The most important part of all of this is getting the ball rolling which you did, and did fast.

If their is no cell reception I simply keep a list of all repeaters in the area or that little book from HRO that has all the California repeater sites. Locally I have found the Catalina repeater to be very handy and since there is no PL you can dial it up and talk, 147.090 I have always had a answer when calling Catalina. It has worked from Los Padres to Orange County Mountains and the San Gabriels. I realise it wouldn't work for you where you were but I have a list of frequencies that work like that for the different areas I travel such as the Owens Valley, Death Valley and the Saline and Eureka Valley.

Sounds like your adventure went as fast and a smooth as it could have gone. Good job.

I recall from my military days that all pilots and ships monitor a frequency called "Guard", but I have no idea what freq that is.

Guard frequencies are 121.50 (civilian) and 243.00 (military).

I used to be an Air Traffic Controller...

I don't know how but it sounds like a good idea. Sort of an Expo OC Rally?? It would be nice to meet the people behind the text and see some of the rigs.

Invite him to come along too. I did just find out that I'll be picking up my mother from LAX that day at 2:30. If possible lets meet early, say 11:00 someplace, have a bite to eat and talk ham (not the food) and I'll head out around 1pm. We could meet a little before that too if that works, do some radio stuff in the parking lot before we head in. Let me know if that works for you guys. I can also do that Sunday if anyone prefers. Jim.

Let's get the round up going.

The 21st is good for us. How about a brunch meeting, start around 10, maybe at a Mall with good parking and some food joints in the parking lot.

Hope to see you guys there.

Sounds good, lets go mall crawling! LOL.
Which mall? I can think of 7 or 8 relatively equidistant in northern OC.

Mall crawling! Ouch!! lol Ok, open to ideas, I sometimes meet groups at the Don Jose's in Buena Park since they open at 11am for lunch, good parking and good prices on food. I'm open to other places, don't know much about Malls in the area since I don't care much for them. I do know Brea Mall has several eatin places around the outside, Red Lobster, Olive Garden come to mind. Or if we want to do a fast food place with lots of parking that's good too. In case you can't tell, well I'm easy! Hmmmmmm...... that might not come out the way I meant it.

Mall of Orange sounds good to me. There is a Fat Burger and a Fish taco place down on the end where Walmart is, ought to be something for everyone.

Does someone want to post this on the meeting forum?

We have multiple threads pointing out the illegality of a ham radio modified to operate outside of the designated ham bands, so what are the legalities of using an aircraft radio to talk to aircraft? I'm thinking legitimate or emergency use, not "hey Hun, land that thing the pizza's here!"
