How does this look?

I've been talking to the guy, he says mechanically the trooper is solid. Allegedly there is no knocking, it stops good, the clutch doesn't slip, the gears change smoothly, and so forth. Apparently there is some cosmetic damage to the back door, but it closes fine and apparently doesn't leak. It is a younger guy, probably doesn't think Troopers are cool and wants something sleeker.

I have tried to get more photos, but he keeps wanting me to come by and see it. But I haven't sold what I need to in order to have the spare cash laying around yet. So I don't want to come by kicking tires knowing for sure that I don't have cash in hand. This is also why not getting more pictures yet doesn't really annoy me.

What do you guys think? Should I hurry and sell what I can to buy it (if it all checks out)?

What a sweet little rig! Ive owned 2 troopers an 86 and 87 both 2 doors. They both also had 4cyl in them. I would definitely go check it out. From the pics I couldnt see much structural damage.

If he's not able or willing to send pics of the minor damage, I wouldn't be in any hurry. This is just my opinion on cl finds. He's listed it so he's trying to be honest, but you don't know how bad the damage is. He's relying on you to be pressured to pay what he's asking regardless of damage by making you not want to waste the trip there.

Price is right, body is nice, so what a little damage it's 25 years old, drive train is a good combo but I-Tech FI can be a little touchy. Things to check- frame rust and Cyl. head (if he will let you run a compression test). It is a LS so most likely has A/C which can lead to cooling issues = head problems. I'm not trying to discourage you but these are the things that are most frequently found problems on the 1st Gen. Troopers w/4cylinders. Personally I would buy it just for the price, all the issues I mentioned are relatively easy to fix (except the frame) if you can do your own work. The running gears on these are nearly bullet proof and that 130,000 miles is very low milage for a Trooper. My 1989 has 246,000 and shows no signs of giving up any time soon. What people don't take into consideration when looking at a 25 year old 4X4 for $1,650 is that you can't even make 3 payments on a new one for that price and that Trooper will do anything a new 4X4 will do with out the depreciation. Good luck Dave

If it spent time a significant amount of time on or near the beach, do not even consider it. It will be a nightmare to work on the suspension and drive train. I have sent MANY 4wd to an early death by driving on the beach over the last 30 years. in the OuterBanks

Nah, there isn't really place down here where it is legal to drive on the beach.

When I was stationed at Camp LeJeune, I used to drive on the beach up there a decent bit, but again, I don't know of a legal beach vehicle access down here unless you are driving an emergency vehicle
