I'm no help, but for those who can provide answers or recommendations you might want to list the year of your LC.

As for safety/reliability i can't see how it could go wrong. At least if you are a good mechanic/let good mechanics do the swap.

Can't tell you about the legal issues though.

What ever time and money you are quoted for the job... multiply that by at least three (i.e. three times the money and time).

Depends upon where you live, as smog regs differ. It would almost be easier to just buy and ship the motor, etc. to a place like Proffits and let them do the conversion stateside....

I think it would be easiest to make a stop in Venezuela and swap out your VIN plates with a 2008 80...

Be aware of the fact that a Prado drives like a car/stationwagon ......
I own a HDJ80 with the 4.2 diesel turbo and additional intercooler and although I love it, it drives like a tractor.....

Prado vs. 80

Regardless of the driving characteristics, the 80 would be a great rig for this trip... The diesels are indiestructable and more relaible than the gas engines, especially on the crap gas you can get on your route.

If you are not a power guy, I'd go with the 1HZ engine as they are probably toyota's most reliable diesel and still in production so part availability is great. you can also turbo it easily and get the best of both worlds.

As long as you are doing the swap, try to get one with the 5 speed too!
