How many miles is "too many miles"?

My 95 4runner has 97K on it It was factory serviced for the first 35K

So a quick look back, my Ford exploder was actually more problem free mechanically. Fit and finish stuff was total garbage, but the truck ran like a top after being launched 30 feet, tipped on its side, pounded in the desert, overloaded with core, etc... I am not making any broad generalizations here or doing a Ford VS. Toyota argument, but the Exploder put up with a lot more abuse with fewer complaints. (Puts on flame suit)

95's had totally different engines, FYI. I wouldn't trust the 3.0's as much as a 3.4L. I tried to aviod the 2nd gen's due to others having problems with various items on the truck.

Yeah, I had the 3.0 in my old 91 extended cab truck, i like the 3.4 alot more. It seems to me that the reliability of the 1996 and up toyotas are alot better.

I have a 87 Toyota pickup with the 22R engine, the truck has 283,000+ miles with NO engine or drivetrain issues. it does not leak a drop of oil nor does it burn any oil.

I understand the 3.4 is different, but I am making a point. My problems have not been engine related (yet) they are all the external systems.

trying to make a point, even with low miles, you can have problems.

I agree with the other posts regarding maintenance of the particular used toy. Sure, some models have a better track record than others, and you want to get the one with the best record if you can. But none of them are just inherently lemons. With a reasonably good record of routine maintenance, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a used rig like you're looking at with mileage like you mentioned. As was said already, have it checked out before you buy. A good evaluator will tell you how well it's been maintained. Don't trust the seller. The fact that they are selling a vehicle that you think might be worth buying in a time when the nation's ecomony is not exactly booming puts them under a little suspicion right there. The fact they'd sell a toy at all does, if you love Toys as much as I do. I'll always regret selling my '89 pickup that I bought back in college.

My '98 has got almost 230,000 miles on it. I'm the original owner, it still runs great, and the wife and I still take it across the country every year. I still consider it (and it has always been) a completely reliable rig. All I have done is routine maintenance, and not even as much as the book suggests in some cases. I expect to have it for another 10 years and 200k.
