How to evaluate a used expedition style, trailer

I'm looking at used trailers and I'm wondering what I need to look for when evaluating them.
Beyond simple visable stuff like rust and dents, etc.
I understand to check for lights and wiring harness functions, etc.
How about wheel bearings and trailer tires?
The hitch system?

I have never owned a trailer, and most stuff I see online is related to more complex trailers and systems like RVs vs the simple metal boxes on wheels I'm looking at.

Cosmetics aren't my concern, safety is.

Not looking at anything as old as a m416, searching for a more recent trailer like 2010 plus Morris mule, Ruger, etc. budget is $3/$5k

Well, wheel bearings IMHO are a personal thing. Yeah, they may have been greased but the prudent thing to do is take the hub apart after you get it & clean & repack them anyways. Peace of mind when you do it yourself & do it right. You can jack up the trailer & make sure tire spins freely then grab it at the 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock positions & wiggle it forward & back/up & down. If there is no play, then do the same at 3 & 9 o'clock positions. If there is no play, you are good. Use high quality full synthetic grease.

As far as the hitch, just make sure it grips the ball so it don't come off. Make sure it is not bent. Some people say never grease them. I do & have always done so & never had an issue. If it is a articulating hitch, just make sure there is no play in the bushings. Simple.

Check the welds & make sure no cracks are present. Make sure it is square if you can. Just eyeball it as best you can to see if anything is tweaked.
