Just this past weekend, the fire starter in my group used one of those. It worked really well.

Or you can just learn how to properly build/make a real fire....doh!

It's easy when you have nice dry wood.

Heck, I've started a fire in a fire pit by using no ignition source other than the remaining heat in the ashes / coals from the previous night's fire!

However, when you don't have nice dry wood, "cheating" is just so much easier.

I know, was just teasing. We have had 2 of the driest summers in the state's history in a row, starting a fire with dry wood usually IS NOT a problem.

I saw this trick when a guy used it to start his charcoal in a starter for BBQing. And I thought, yup gonna use that for camping.

I didn't realize that it was the same fitting for the 1lb Coleman bottles.

A small cup of go-juice from the five gallon jug of diesel fuel that I carry works nicely for coaxing reluctant fires to life as well. It doesn't flash off like gasoline (no-boom) and works nicely to get even damp wood burning.

Growing up I was in charge of the fire. The gold standard was always a 1 match fire (wood match) with nothing but wood and newspaper. I have had many weekend fires with a single match on the first night then re-stoking from coals on subsequent nights. That said, nowadays I light it the easiest way available. Gas, torch, whatever is available.
