How to obtain weather reports out in the field?

Beyond all the options mentioned in this thread (NOAA VHF weather transmitters, broadcast satellite radio, decoding the weather satellite's down-link signals, or listening to the HF "weatherfax" system...) There's always the simple answer of listening to AM broadcast stations. Particularly after dark when there's sky-wave propagation, it's hard to imagine there being too many places where these sort of broadcasters don't reach.

Get a hand cranked/dynamo emergency radio with separate NOAA bands. Works most of the time . Or get a delorme inreach and ask someone for a quick report via satellite. (This means relying on someone to check and respond to messages)

On HF you can use rms express to request forecast data. Used on the sailboat, works awesome, and you can do email. Look up winlink.org.
