Hi everybody
I’ve been away ever since I sold my 99 gen 2.5 back in 2014.
my wife and I got new cars. She got an AWS Ford Flex, I got a mustang.
Well, we really missed the montero. Like, A LOT. The flex has been a great car for family road trips, good fuel economy, comfortable, spacious.
But, we atill missed the Monty. Missed off road.
Decided to go with a Gen III this timing as the gen 2.5’s I was finding were all pretty trashed.
not a lot to choose from in not cal either. Seemed like they were all mid west/ east coast cars. Just about every one I found had rust. Our old one was a rust bucked as well. It came from IL, so...
anyway, we found a really clean, zero rust, fairly well maintained Gen III in so cal, so we bit the BULLITT and drove the 1200 miles round trip to get it. Paid a little more than I wanted too, but. It’s clean, new timing belt, tensioner, h20 punt, t-stat, exhaust manifolds. 170k miles. No smoke. Passed a ok. Didn’t seem to consume any oil on the trip home.
there are still some things that need to be repaired/ replaced.
The drive home up hwy 5 was a little nervous racking. Taking a vehicle you have zero history with and hitting the road in 100* head...
I had my eye on the temp gauge the whole way.
She did great. Never went past the middle. So, naturally, me being me I began my build list I’m my head as I drove.?
Also, learning about the car and discovering things I didn’t see in the sale pics or seller failed to mention.... like the radio does t work... that made for a long trip ?.
anyway.... it had these ridiculous 22” wheels with total mall crawler tires. The are like driving on a washboard and howl like crazy. So, they’ll be the first to go.
It has been lifted 2” as well. Other than that, it’s all stock.
I’ll start a new build theead soon.
Cheers!
