I built me a rear bumper.

My buddy used a spindle and lockout hub assembly from an 1/2 ton Chevy axle for his tire carrier hinge, and it works great.

this is a great idea, got a build thread or more pics? thanks

Sorry, no more pics or build thread. All he did was take a outer assembly from a 10bolt Chevy front, cut down the spindle and welded it to the bumper, then he took the hub shaved it down also.
Then all you need to do is put the hub, bearings, and seals all back on the spindle and your down. He got his outer assembly for free off of a Chevy ten front end being given away. You can use just about any front 4wheel drive axle for it.
Hope this helps you, If you have any more questions fill free to ask.

Yeah, exactly. It's not always necessary, but sometimes I stealth it in a rest stop or someplace. I don't have to have the camper fully closed when I close the swingout, but need a way to reach through a narrowly opened door at least. Maybe I should hinge it even with the door and connect it to the door. But then what happens if someone decides to latch it on me and I'm stuck inside :Wow1: Just have to think it through a little.

Sorry for the hijack... seems to fit the thread at least a little.

well it would take a lot of ingenuity and thought, but have you thought of electric actuators or air cylinders? especially if you had onboard air and used an air cylinder or even hydraulic, weight wouldn't be an issue at all.

its too bad my imagination outweighs my fabrication abilities.
