I need some advice regarding seat replacement

I'm getting a 1990 Chevy shortbox, or short bed which is a single cab.i want to replace the bench seat with bucket seats but I'm not sure how to do it since it only has holes to drill in the outside of the bucket seat brackets. Any advice?

Qualitex makes retrofit bucket kits that mount on a subframe that is made to fit those situations. It has been about 14 years since I bought any, but I was very happy with the 40/20/40 combo I put in my 84 Chevy. At the time I think it was about $1100 in cloth.

google can probably figure out if they are still in business... But the general concept is the same, use a subframe across the whole truck and get buckets that bolt all in the same plane.

I don't know about chevy, but a lot of the older Ford guys grab a welder and drill and mount of some newer seats on the old brackets.

I have a 1991 K2500 regular cab, long box and I was about to do buy seats and do just this, but then I bought a new vehicle. You can find all the information you need by searching google for "gmt400 bench to bucket" and clicking the first link that pops up. (Spoiler alert, you will have to drill out your floorboard and add bolts/washers for the inner seat brackets unless you got lucky and they were included on your vehicle from the factory.)
