Icom IC-2200H mic problem

I have been having intermittent mic problems on my icom radio, sometimes the mic just does not work, I cannot transmit or do anything from the mic. After sometime the mic starts working, ive tried cleaning the connector without any chnage, it just seems to have a mind of its own. The radio is fairly old and been used quite a bit, is this a known problem on these radios?

I've owned this model twice with no problems. I just bought another yesterday and will be installing it next week. I'd buy a new mic if I were you they aren't super expensive.

I have had good luck with the IC2200H and the HM 154T mike and also the HM-95 from my IC2000H.

The mic PTT switch in the ICOM 2200 has been known to fail. Some research on the web will turn up some stories. Cleaning the switch won't help as the contacts in the switch fail internally (you can verify this with an ohm meter). Some people have had luck with shimming the switch, but others have found that shimming just leads to a cracked switch mount.

Aside from the switch, it's a pretty good mic so it's worth replacing the switch. Some HROs sell the switches for about $1. They are relatively easy to replace. Just use a solder wick or solder sucker to remove the solder from the switch pins and re-solder the switch in place. Not too hard for a beginner with a little patience. If you don't have a HRO in the area, you can order the switch directly from ICOM or most electronic parts stores carry an equivalent switch.

If the mic is unreliable, there is nothing to lose by trying to fix it :sombrero:
