If you need a cell phone in Mexico then READ THIS. .01 a minute!

Guys, I have guided and outfitted hunts in Mexico for 20 years and just this year I found the greatest deal ever for having cell coverage in Mexico. I don't know when they started this but I wish I would have found this years ago and it is simple simple simple

I bought an ATT GoPhone on Amazon for $15. Its a Nokia Lumina 520 and my plan was to put a Telcel sim card in it but when I called to activate it they had a much better solution. I signed up for the US/Mexico/Canada plan for $55 and then put down an additional $15 to be able to make and receive calls. I did not plan on using it much so $15 would work. While I was talking to the representative about the plan he informed me that texts to and from Mexico were free on the plan and that calls were only .01 per minute. That means my $15 would get me 1500 minutes. I did not believe him but its true. First call I made after crossing was to my wife and it was a 20 minute call. When I hung up I received a notification that the call cost me .20 and I had a remaining balance of $14.80. I was floored

We all used my phone to call home and I still have a balance of over $12

You have to use ATT as ATT operates off of a GSM network so if you want to use your phone anyplace but in certain towns then go with ATT. Verizon has horrible coverage in Mexico

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions

Yes. Its a month to month plan for their Go Phone. I am not locked into a contract

The AT&T phone operates on the same GSM network as Telcel so you get great service

That does sound quite nice. I usually add the international package with Verizon which is 100MB/$25 data and expensive phone calls :D

I made the switch from AT&T to Verizon about 3 years ago and the service in Mexico is horrible compared to AT&T and this is due to AT&T being a GSM network and Verizon being a CDMA network. Mexico is primarily GSM and I normally have no coverage with my Verizon phone on the ranches I lease there so this Go Phone option is a godsend for me

I could not find a plan such as the one you described on ATT Wireless site. For GoPhone users, best I found find is this: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/international/gophone.html?tab=2

If you have a smart phone, it's much worse: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/international/roaming.html?tab=1

I have T-Mobile Simple Choice plan which gives me international roaming, unlimited data and texting in over 120+ countries at no additional cost. Calling from those countries is $0.20 per minute. As far as I know, I can't add anything to lower the cost per minute while outside the U.S. But I'm quite happy with what I pay and what I receive in return.

The ATT plan you describe looks good if your heavy Mexico traveler and use a lot of voice minutes.

Yep, the plan I have is not the one listed there. They said it was new and after every call I would have a notification letting me know how many minutes the call was and what me credit was based on my $15 deposit and it was indeed .01 a minute

Agreed... the Verizon service down there is poor at best. It's about the one place in the world I've traveled that Verizon is just simply off the hook, pun intended.
