Igloo beverage jug for water storage?

I've been thinking about mounting a 5 gal. Igloo beverage jug to the rear of my truck camper for a handy water supply.

I like the idea of filling this with ice and water for a ready supply of cold drinking water...

I think one of these racks might be capable of mounting the jug to my camper.

Anyone ever use this rack or other method of mounting a 5gal jug of similar type to your rig?

My cousin bought one of those, and he had trouble keeping the lid on. Once he strapped that down, he found it leaked around the lid when going over bumpy roads. So, he sold it.

Mind you, that was 10 years ago. Maybe the design has improved since then.

I had two of those (same model in your link) holding the Igloo 5-gallon water jugs with extra insulation (the blue ones- 5-day I think). I mounted them on a hitch carrier we used before we got our Chaser. They worked OK, but the strap is hard to cinch down- needs to be replaced with the ratchet type. Also, the friction fit lids on the jugs can come off. I had more problem with this when I had them on roof rack, but the bumps can jar them loose even if they are out of the wind. A bungee or a couple pieces of flat strap, screwed into the lid and the body hold it securely. Even secured that way though, the lids are not perfectly sealed, so fine silt finds its way into the water. I have no problem with this as it sinks to the bottom and doesn't come out the spout when in use, and we are talking very small amounts.

All that said, I would still recommend it if you like cold water and don't have the space elsewhere for it. We drink LOTS of water when hiking, so there is no way we could keep a good supply in the fridge/cooler for the whole family. A block of ice will keep it cold for several days. The ice water does spoil you on hot summer hikes/camping though.

I will probably mount one of mine on my rear bumper when I get around to building it.

after doing more research...

After doing a little more digging I came across the Gott (rubbermaid) brand cooler jug as well...

It has a screw down lid rather than the pressure fit one on the Igloo... I'm guessing it seals tighter and won't jump off like the ilgoo one can.

Funny part is that Gott doesn't have a rack mount, at least not like the Igloo... theirs is more of a base mount with straps that run over the top of the jug. It won't work for mounting it to the rear surface of my camper.

One other thing I'm thinking about is weight... with a 10 gal jug your talking over 90 lbs hanging out back. It will take a pretty stout rack to put up with that much weight bouncing down a rough trail. I maybe better stick with the 5 gal. size. and go for the "super" insulated version.

it keeps on working!

I have used the same water cooler since i had my 1972 jeep (bought it new) and have used it on every rig i have ever had.It is now mounted on my 4wc/trd 4x4 on rear bracket held on with 1/8 inch straps bolted to rack.Lid is always secured with strap to make sure i don't lose it (have left top off after filling a few times, hince the strap!Mine is the painted on the inside one but never have had any rust, always dry out after each trip and leave lid loose. You can get a look here.http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10307&page=3http://

We have the igloo one and the lid definitely stays put. It does dent though if you use it as a seat. The screw-top rubbermaid one is probably more useful in that respect.

We've also used it to keep drinks cool at the same time as having cold water on tap - 1/3 ice 1/3 water and 1/3 beer. The labels come off bottles after a while and gum up the tap so cans are better.

Cheers,
Graham

I loved my Gott 2 gallon jug. Used it everyday when I worked construction, then used it for an ice bucket when we camped. They will keep cocktail ice for a couple of days even in the heat.
Nothing like a G&T in camp after a hot day on the trail.

We use alot of these on the wildland firefighting engines. I have seen 20+ different shapes, styles and colors. I think that the screw top seems to be the most secure. These have multiple applications, watercooler, ice chest, and washing machine. With the flat top of the screw top design you can use it as a chair.

Igloo 5 gallon water jug

I have a 5 gallon jug on my trailer. I fill it up with ice and and some water and have ice cold water for my trip. If I can get block ice. I will put two blocks in and just top off with water.

I use a short black rubber bungee to hold the top down and a rachet strap to hold the jug to the mount.
