Ignition cylinder issue.

Not sure if this the right spot to ask this.

I have a ,97 Tacoma 4WD, auto. Sometimes, the ignition cylinder wouldn't turn to the off position, unless I disconnected the battery. I have replaced the ignition cylinder with a new aftermarket one, which needed to be replaced, anyway, because the key could bed pulled out no matter which position it was in. But, that didn't fix the issue . Found online that it could, also be a sloppy shifter linkage, which mine was. So, I replaced the two bushings, yesterday. That didn't fix the issue, either, but now it seems to not want to turn to the off poison, all the time. Any suggestions?

I have posted this in the Tacomaworld forum with no help, except a smartass remark.

Patience is a virtue on any forum, hopefully someone with the answer will read and respond there. As hard as it is to believe not everyone reads each post several times a day. They will come thru for you.

I’ve never owned a Toyota, but in lots of vehicles the ignition cylinder can bind on the steering and prevent turning on, maybe also prevent turning off? Wiggle the wheel as you turn back.

Also, you mentioned aftermarket cylinder. Did you change the switch too or just the lock cylinder? Did your aftermarket cylinder have provision for a thumb lock that has to be depressed to go to the lock position?

The steering always feels like it's not binding. So, I don't think it's that. I do know that can be one issue.

I changed just the cylinder not the switch. Yes, the cylinder has the provision for the thumb lock.

Just an update. I looked at it, agian. It seems like there is play in the shifter going front to back. The play in going side to side was iliminated by the new bushings I put in.

If it is the type of cylinder that connects to a spring loaded ignition switch, I would next disconnect the switch (if possible) and see if the cylinder can return to the lock position in its own. The problem could be in the switch link itself, or the actual switch. Depending on if you are using the thumb lock it could have become engaged, preventing rotation as well. Just some random Sunday musings to help you out.
