Just wrapped up a trip with Overland Journal & BMW Motorrad - 900 miles of trails from Las Vegas through Southern Utah to Colorado - the Utah Traverse.

Only scraped the frame once on the Beef Basin trail, right before this picture at the gnarly right hander through the cliffs in the back.

The Hema Maps stickers aren't permanent - just one of the expedition sponsors.

I like the truck even more now, after going through mud and snow on Elk Ridge, going down Bobby's Hole and up Elephant Hill. Never got stuck or had to use the Maxtrax. Engaged the rear locker several times, but never had to use the front.

The 4.88s are so rad. The truck feels great now. Still a 4 cylinder, but performs awesome off-road.

Aired down to 12 psi, crawled up and over everything I threw at it.

I have very few complaints about this truck, but I do wish the swaybars could be disconnected more easily...

I also rarely think about selling my Tacoma, but when I do, it's because of trucks like this RHD Turbo Diesel BJ74 -

How sick is that?

Where did you have your gears installed? Locally in Utah? I will eventually regear but haven't really looked into local shops here in Utah.

Six States in Salt Lake, but there's a location in Orem too. Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters recommended Orem because they know Toyotas well, but I went with SLC to save time. I thought they did a good job, though they took a little longer and they nicked an axle seal. I woke up to a big puddle of gear oil in the garage, but they replaced it free of charge. Overall, very knowledgeable and I'd use them again. $300 for the front and $250 for the rear to regear and install both lockers.

Kurt recommended them to me as well. Sounds like it is a good place to go. How long did it take them to do it? My truck is my daily so having it out of commission for days on end is a no go.

Some sort of lost...
You can also order the third member and front diff from east coast gear supply and install them yourself. I think my 4.56 gears and front and rear ARBs ran $3000 or so shipped, after the core charge was refunded. The rear only takes a couple hours at best. The front takes a little longer but it's not a bad afternoon garage project.
After I received a couple quotes for over $5000 for everything installed, I decided I'd rather save a couple grand for gas money. ;)

Yep. I did the same thing. Pretty easy to do. The front end takes time more than skill. I wasn't about to pay the install fee for someone else to do it. Although, if you're worried about it, do the rear yourself and have someone else install the front clamshell. Would save a few bucks.

Should've tagged along on the remainder of our trip! It was epic.

Lost clutch halfway through Posion Spider.

Nice to meet you.

The gears are only like $1200 from ECGS. Ikarus said he only paid like $500 for the install on the gears total. I have the rear E-locker and don't need a front locker so ~$1700 if I understand right and I don't have to mess with it and can have someone do it that is much more knowledgeable than I.

Dropped it off on Monday morning at 8am. Got a call Monday at 5 saying they were just about done, but they'd have to keep it until the next morning. Picked up Tuesday 8am.

Yeah, I thought about doing that. I enjoy modifying my truck myself, but for now I stick to bolt-ons and suspension modifications. I was going to install the gears and lockers with a friend who's a fabricator and mechanic, but this Overland Journal trip came out of nowhere and I had to get things put together asap. Would have taken us a few weeks to clear out our shop, prep everything and do the install.

Yeah man, wish I could have. That sucks! Make it out ok?

Yeah, install was $550 for gears and lockers. I bought the gears from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters for $830 + tax. Then I bought a rear locker and got a free compressor, and bought the front locker when the price dropped. About $3400 all said and done, and the only labor time for me was installing the compressor.

Nice! Gears and lockers are very cool. I opted to not go for a front locker and rely solely on ATrac and the TRD rear locker. It's enough for me but a front locker would certainly be nice on occasion.

I've used Six States in Salt Lake for gear and ARB installs several times and they do good work. The $550 they charged you included pulling your differentials for you? I've just brought them pulled third members and clamshells.
