I'm FINALLY a Jeep owner!!!!

Got my 99' XJ Last week! I will be building a modest expo rig out of it as the money comes and my injuries heal. I was in a bad car wreck a week and a half before Halloween and as luck would have it I was "forced" to buy my new baby!, her name is Helga and she has the sport trim with the Chrysler 8.5 rear-end and as far as I can tell so far, no ABS! (Course with everything else going on, I'm not real certain which day it is, so bear with me!) I'm so excited that I can finally contribute to this site instead of just drooling all over all you guys' handy work. Do be patient with me though, because I can barely walk right now, so some of the more in-depth work will be farmed out for the time being until I can contort myself under the rig and get off a creeper without anyone else's help!! Pictures to follow, but again, be patient. I don't know how often a build is done in real time on this site, but add me to the mix. I might go long expanses without a post, BUT I WILL POST, THIS I VOW!! Not so much for your entertainment, but more so for your expertise, opinions (good or bad) and general overall camaraderie of something we all obviously share a passion for!!!

To start you guys off, I will get some pics up of her, and they will most likely be 5hitty!!! The first things on the list are Getting the windshield replaced which is scheduled for Friday at the dealership free of charge. Then I'm going to do a headlight upgrade. They are on their last legs and I can't see crap! (Should have test drove it at night!) Overall she is in great condition with a little over 107K miles on her, so she isn't even broke in yet. I'm sure I will end up with all the famous electrical issues they're famous for, but I'm ready and willing (and mostly able!). Anyway, thats probably enough for now, if you couldn't already tell, I'M EXCITED!!! and I hope you all enjoy my thread, and if I put it in the wrong place I'm sorry.

That's my personal pick for best year of XJ

4.0l without head issues (those started in 2000-2001 depending on casting number)
AW4 tranny (or AX15 if it's manual)
NP231 tcase (or NP241 if you have AWD)
C8.25 rear axle
Dana 30 front axle (both of those are good up to 33-35in tires)

Do a good baseline maintenence right off the bat, and you'll be well on your way to trouble-free jeeping

One of your very first mods, if you intend to offroad it, should be a set of rockrails from whom-ever has the best deal. Unibody cracks are really the only enemy for this rig, and they'll go a long way if you protect it from the get go, as well as making it much easier to reach roof loads whilst standing on them.

If you end up running hot (some do) engine-wise, hood vents or a hood spacer are great low-buck places to start. and yes, you DO NOT have to worry about holes in the hood during a rainstorm. Water ingress is a non-issue.

I really liked pep boy Pro-stop semi-metallic brakes on my rig. VERY cheap and long lasting.

Love to see some pics when you get a chance.

BTW, if your plastics are "greying" you can pull them off, and re-coat them with Krylon fusion black...
