I'm gettin' the itch to change the color on my XJ...

After about a year of black and silver I'm ready.

Plus, I want to re-paint the new-to-me 16's a mellow color than silver and gold, and remove the lower plastic panels and associated glue.

I used a satin, oil-based tractor paint last time and its holding up really well. I prepped the surfaces with sandpaper and alcohol to scuff it up and to remove any oils. I rolled it on thinned a bit with mineral spirits, with a high density roller, and it came out JUST the way I wanted it to.

Worked really well, so I think I'll stay with the satin look.

Question is, what color? I really like neutral colors. I'm not really worried about doorsills/engine compartment, etc, as I plan on keeping this truck for as long as I can, since its proven to be so reliable and economical

I'm thinking of doing a satin drab green, or satin dark earth for the body, and satin black for the bumpers, lower panels, and bumpers.

Can I get something like a rustoleum satin black mixed at a place like home depot or dixieline?

I only see colors like black/white/ hunter green, etc...

Here's my rig as it sits right now...in case anyone decided to photochop it. :ylsmoke:

Edit: I was thinking on my break just now, that maybe I just need to finish what I started which was to murder out the whole rig with satin black.

1. Remove lower plastic trim
2. remove glue
3. Remove flares, gutter trim, roof molding
4. smooth trim job for Logans bumper on front fenders
5. sand and paint flares/lower doors/trim and rear bumper
6. Pull and refinish front bumper
7. scuff wheels and refinish in dark grey or black

But I'm lazy. I think olive drab would look real good on your rig.

Yeah, I've seen that rig before. very nice. I really like the black and tan look.

I plan on eventually adding a swing-away and sliders, both would look good in a nice satin black.

I plan on running a safari snorkel, too, and its a consideration for me that the snorkel would REALLY stand out against a tan background. I wonder if I could paint the body of the snorkel with Krylon fusion (made for plastic) to help it blend a bit.

Again, I really like the black fenders, grill, bumper and bar work.

I likely wouldn't put anything other than blacked out Jeep factory emblems.
(No faux military markings, etc.)
