Don't really know what all the fuss is about shipping a vehicle from Au is. I shipped a few and it was no big deal. I always talked to the owners on the phone before wiring my money. I never had a single problem except for a few parts being stolen. I shipped all the cruisers from the east coast of Au. Total cost to my door was always less then $3000. I thought all this was old news by now. So many people have bought and shipped from Au that I don't think they have any cruisers left over their.

It is not a big deal but isn't cheap.

I have had a lot sent to me from Australia, New Zealand and Colombia (S.A.). For at least 6yrs now, shipping has killed it. I had a 5spd trans air mailed to me from Oz last summer, cost was $500 in shipping on a trans that cost $1000. So it ended up being a $1500 trans, used mind you and in unknown condition. I can buy a brand new NV4500 5spd for $1500. So to me, it is no longer worth it. It is not a big deal at all to ship it on over, you just have to ask yourself is it worth it. Also I have brought in from NZ in the last 10yrs, PTO winches, turbo's, 5spds, t-cases, ect. From Aus. PTO's, bull bars, body parts, boxes upon boxes of parts, axles, alt's, bell housings, flywheels, clutches, lift kits, ect ect. On the heavy stuff, shipping was brutal even 10yrs ago. But it is worse now and HLS has made lot's of things cost more than it did even just 5-6yrs ago.

For trucks, Latin America is overlooked. Australia used to be good when our dollar was strong over there but not anymore and import expenses have gone up. LHD imported trucks always sell for more than RHD trucks. So IMHO, Latin America is where you should go to buy, it just takes more time and more looking to find a good truck. For parts, Oz is still good as long as you are willing to pay for the expenses to bring it over here.

I don't think that's a useful comparison, because the whole point of buying stuff from overseas is you're getting something you can't get in the states.
NV4500's are common, thus there is obviously no need to import them

Ro-ro from Europe to the US is between 2 and 3 grand, depending on port and size of the vehicle. OZ would be more. If you're looking at shipping the vehicle here just for preparation, I would suggest finding someone overseas to handle the prep for you.
sixbennetts- 12k might include services beyond port. Also, he's talking about a big ol' class six truck here.
To get one into the States permanently, it needs to be an 88 model or older. It will be petty tired at that age. Too tired, for what it costs.

My point was simply that you can get a superior trans for the same kind of money. And it is also just my opinion.

Right, which means you shouldn't be looking to import something when you can get a superior version in North America.

The whole point of importing something to get to something you can't get in North America, so there is no comparison really.

Telling this to a guy who has done as much importing as me seems kind of....I don't know, like stating the obvious.

My point was, why import when you can get as good here if not better? If you just want to be different no worries, by all means. I imported because I like the trucks and have been a big enthusiast for many years. But things have changed, just one being how expensive it is to import now compared to 10yrs ago. One of the advantages of importing in the past, for myself, has been the buying power of the US dollar. That has also changed so not only are there may increased expense to import, our dollar doesn't go nearly as far as it used to.

Wow, you're not kidding:

80 series Cruisers get an exemption from NHTSA, too. I think you just need to fix the lights. That leaves you with the EPA... have to do a little reading...

No I wasn't kidding. I have done my research and then some. :)

Cost about $2k to drive it to the US, pretty fun trip too! Buying power of the US dollar and solid trucks cans till be found out there.

That looks pretty beat and it has 300,000km's on it....

Based on everything I've read trucks generally get used hard in SA and are maintained only when absolutely necessary.

How do you get that it is beat from 2 pictures? And 300k is 186,000 miles. Panama is in Central America not South America. It is also one of the richest countries in CA. Panama and Costa Rica battle for the number one richest country in CA year to year these days. Having been down in Latin America a lot, I also don't think that they don't take care of their vehicles. In fact from what I have seen, on average they take very good care of their vehicles. Also FYI, the Pan Am is the main road in Panama. It is used to get anywhere in the country and is in very good condition. Speed limit is also very slow on it and all over Panama. So I would be surprised if any of these trucks have seen a hard life. A hard life in Panama would be a ranch truck, beach truck (and would be rotten) or an off-roader that gets driven hard in the mud often. I have seen this in Panama but these trucks don't really fit that bill.

More 80-series from Panama and none of them look beat to me.

And many Nissan Patrols....

http://www.encuentra24.com/panama-en/cars-auto-trucks-used-car#search=keyword.patrol|f_make.nissan

which FYI, these Patrols are 50% to 75% less $$$ than say in Australia. Also in Australia the TD42 diesel is a bit rare and demands a premium price. All this has to do with the economy within the said country and it's importation laws plus taxes applied to vehicles imported and sold in the country. Colombia for example has lot's of nice trucks (abliet not many diesels) but they are much higher in cost due to tax/importation laws in Colombia. And also more expensive to export from Colombia.

Cheers
