In-cab cold water delivery system

I have had an idea for quite some time now, to come up with a modification to my on-board fridge that would allow me to sip on cold water from a drinking tube while driving. Since my fridge is inside the cab of the truck, I would store a full hydration bladder inside the fridge, and install a fitting that passes through the fridge wall to allow hook up of the bladder on the inside, and a heavily insulated drinking tube on the outside. The tube would run up and over the seat where it could be easily accessed with a bite-valve while driving.

So my question is - has anyone drilled a hole in the side of their fridge yet? :yikes:

There is a possibility I could make the connection in an area that already has a couple of lines passing through (see pic).

The funny thing is... I usually like my drinking water at room temperature (no ice). But in the southwest, the water can heat up pretty good when left in the truck on sunny days. It would be nice to have cold water on-demand for summer trips.

Oh yeah, baby! I can't wait to see this. Greg and I joked about adding a spigot from my water system inside the cab as well. That would be simple...emotionally simple. Boy drilling into your fridge? That's a new level of courage.

Ahh, yes, I had seen that. Very useful mod. This hole would be different in that it would go all the way through (and be larger).

Put nalgene in fridge, take out of fridge, take a drink, put back in fridge. No holes needed. :shakin:

Yea, but the point is to enjoy cold water practically hands-free, akin to the racers. It takes too much time to stop, get out, open the fridge, get out the bottle... and then it gets warm if you don't put it back in the fridge. I am also thinking about a catheter setup too - Scott and I will need that for the arctic trip :Wow1: :p

Just don't get the two confused. :shakin:

What about some sort of valve so that you can attach the bladder to the inside and attach a hose to the outside, but be able to remove both for easy cleaning.

Ultimately if there is a reasonable way to make ice without freezing the rest of your stuff (Two-Zone maybe?) just throw some ice in the camelbak.

I agree with nullifier -- if you're going to drill a hole in your fridge, why not just make it a kegerator?!?

But seriously -- that's a great idea. I occasionally hang my camelback behind my seat so I can sip on water while driving. But it's definitely not cold!! Still easier than messing with opening & closing water bottles while driving.

I saw a setup years ago on a 75 series Land Cruiser modified for expeditions that routed the water through the A/C system. I don't know how cold the water got, but it had to be better than room-temperature, right? Come to think of it, I may still have a picture of the spigot coming out the dash. No other pics or instructions on how to do it, but I thought that was pretty cool.

I'll upload the pic onto the album that Scott graciously donated, I'm getting ready to put up a bunch of expedition pics.

In my teen days a couple of us chipped in and bought an old Pontiac to cruise around for summer. We cut the top off the car for the convertable look and in the glove box we stuck a moveable kitchen sink faucet that swung out.
In the trunk we put a small tank that someones mom would not miss and used a new pump for windshield washer fluid to pump liquor out the tap. Just kept a small cooler full of ice, a 2 liter bottle of pop beside you and some plastic dixi cups.
We were pulled over by the police once and just downed our drinks, crushed the cups on the floor, and none the wiser. The officer checked the pop to make sure no party drinks were in store and never even seen the tank in the trunk when he looked.
It was a great time. Man the memorys.

Now (years later) my wife and I use our camel backs on the back of our seat with drink tubes cliped to the seat belt piller.
It works great but I find she needs to go to the bathroom more often. Must be with age.
Yes no liquer now!
Times in a small town were different then. Looking back we must have had some common sence since we did take turns on who was driving and not drinking. The rest were on a party ride.
