Has anyone run accross a double din GPS Nav system where you can load your own topo maps? Looked into it several years ago when the nice 6-7" screens came out, but none had Navs where you could load aftermarket topo maps for offroad use.
I just bought one of the Chinese cheapies off ebay but haven't had gotten around to mounting it yet (need to do some cutting and bondo work to adapt 2 din unit to 1.5 din slot).
Physical quality seems good, the buttons don't suck for example; the OS is vanilla Android 4.x and Play store compatible so my fingers are crossed that it will work out well. Hardware spec is decent.
Once you have a decent generic hardware platform it's really up to the software at that point.
The Kenwood ones use a Garmin nav system. I have the DNX9990 and have tried a couple of 3rd party topo maps on it, didn't really see where Garmin supports their Topos on it and didn't really want to pay through the nose for them anyway. Not a great platform to view in enough detail to see the contour lines. To zoom in enough to get them to appear, you're damn near life size on the map scale
I have a pioneer in dash that will run the apps on my iphone. It will also piggy back the screen on my phone so if it works on my phone, it works on my in dash
You will need an android head unit... mixed reviews from what I've seen.
Best option may be a GPS-enabled tablet and RAM mount.
Benefit there is that you can also run Torque or whatever other ODBII-reading app you prefer for good system diagnostics.
or get a cheap android tablet, it works great, I paid 199 bucks for my acer tablet and about 90 bucks for my mounting setup. Then another 11 bucks for my gps receiver and 6 bucks for my obd module.
