I'm in need of a hitch mount carrier for my new Triumph Tiger 800 XC.

the bike weighs 470 wet and I need it to go across the back of my van on a class III hitch. I am looking to get the right one, not the cheap one, if ya dig...any help would be great, but plz don't suggest a cheap one ment for a scooter or dirt bike, that just wont work!

Tks...

Check the weight rating on that class III hitch - you're going to be pushing 550 pounds between the carrier & bike.

Moto-Tote and VersaHaul Sport are the two I recommend, M/T is about 10-15 lbs lighter. Also, invest in some quality tie down straps, I like the Ancra ratchet straps.

Honestly you need to have something custom made or modify a heavy duty carrier- something that has more than one mounting point. I've got a very heavy duty steel carrier that mounts in my hitch and has a clamp that tightens it to the receiver but it still moves some with the DRZ (which of course is lighter than the Tiger). You can probably get away with a good quality single receiver if you add additional points to tie it into your bumper. This applies doubly if you intend to take it off-road or even over bumpy roads as you really don't want the bike swaying and having a handlebar come through your rear window; I usually strap one of my elbow pads over the right grip as extra protection.

versa-haul carriers are great. I had one for my WR450. The have a lock down clamp that keeps the carrier from rocking in the hitch. All steel carrier with ramp. If I ever need a carrier again i would not hesitate to buy a versa haul.

Keep in mind your hitch's rating is for the load 8-12" behind the pin (normal ball location). Put the weight further back (cargo or motorcycle carrier) and the hitch's capacity goes down due to the leverage...

It is really easy to get two more reciever tubes welded to the E350 hitch and build a custom carrier.

I built one out of an old trailer ramp that will hold that kind of weight. The problem is the weight of the bike when loading. My XR 400 is 260 pounds and its a handful to load. One wrong move and the bars will go thru the glass on the rear door. It also rolled down on me real fast one time and the license plate had me in ER for 5 stitches. I'm just saying its a lot of weight and a real handful when it's 2 feet up in the air. A small trailer from Craigslist or even a Harbor Freight job will serve you well if you can fit one in your plans.
