(Infinite) Travel Masterpiece
If you subscribe to the idea that given infinite time, an infinite number of monkeys typing at random on an infinite number of typewriters would eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare then I have a similar corollary: given an opportunity to take an infinite (ok, so maybe only 600) number of photographs, a monkey (ok, so maybe just me) could possibly (probably not, but hey it's an abstract idea anyway) produce a masterpiece of celluloid (ok, so I'm using a rather inexpensive digital camera and there is really no film but it sounds cool).
So anyway, my trip report of the past weekend (16-20 June 2010) is for my family trip from Clinton, MS to Gulf Shores, AL with a stop in Flora-Bama, FL and Hattiesburg, MS as well…a Happy Father’s Day gift for me if I do say so myself (I just did – thank you very much – you’re very welcome indeed – you’re too kind – no, you’re too kind).
I was going to turn a work trip into a psydo-family vacation opportunity as I was going to be in Mobile, AL for some training. The training was cancelled but I had already made campsite reservations at the Gulf State Park about 1-hour south of Mobile on the barrier islands of the Gulf Shores. A co-worker had the same idea so we decided we’d use some vacation time and enjoy the time away from work. Keep in mind that we’re both on a US Corps of Engineers National Hurricane Response Team and subject to recall and that we both work for the Engineer Research and Development Center and so we get lots of information on the BP oil spill that is washing ashore in Gulf Shores even right now.
Ultimately, this trip report is a tribute to the workers on the beaches valiantly struggling against the incoming oil. By several orders of magnitude, the workers outnumber the vacationers. They are all HEROES in my book and I made many efforts to thank them all – there were hundreds! As this report will show in the photos to follow you’ll see what I mean. They were armed with shovels and bags, uniformed in rubber boots and gloves, supported by an armada of tractors pulling the offensive tar-balls from the “sugar sand” beaches that frame the economic livelihood of Gulf Shores for fishing, tourism, and travel.
So the first photo is a loser I know…my daughter Naomi lost this tooth during the trip…a big event to be sure.
The second and third photos here bring clarity to the “monkey” school of thought for this report – no LowT for me although I can recommend 4-Lo as a treatment! I was thinking of seashell dentures or “grill” enhancements but Naomi thinks “snaggletoothed” is the way to go for the moment.
More photos and story to continue (hafta work a bit so this will be like an ocean-tide or moon-phase)…
