Inside/outside gear storage case recommendations?

Currently when offroading I sleep in the cargo area of my Montero and keep my gear outside at night in soft bags but Id like to start using hard cases that are water and critter proof. I would keep the case(s) inside the truck while driving then place them outside a night and it would be nice if it could be strapped to my roof rack if necessary. I want something more robust than a Home Depot storage bin but I dont want the expense or weight of a Pelican case.

I'm a fan of the Plano cases (e.g. Plano 68 or 110qt). They're light weight, spacious, and decently weatherproof as is. Some folks add rubber seals and stuff, but honestly I've had them on the roof in the rain, outside, etc., and never had any water ingress.

ebay can be a good source for used Pelican or similar cases. I've looked into Hardigg cases in the past, even more bomb-proof than Pelican and dont have the name recognition so can sometimes find surplus or used ones at a good deal.

I settled on a much cheaper used Yakima roof box that I use soft sided duffel bags inside. Holds a ridiculous amount of gear and cost $200 with a bit of facebook marketplace searching off season

Zarges (and Alu-Box) have been the go-to standard for decades. Lightweight, durable, waterproof and many are rated 'bear-proof'. Of course that comes with a matching price. But if you keep an eye out for surplus ones, they can be very reasonable. A guy had some for sale here on the Expo a year and a half ago that were 'surplus' from the US military (used for drone battery transport), Zarges K470, that were 1/3 the retail price and had the added benefit of killer foam padding inside for people that might be using them for camera equipment, etc. So keep an eye out on Craigslist, eBay, Marketplace for 'deals'.

They are fairly easy to modify due to their construction. I modified one to open from the end instead of the side for easy of access when three across on a rack.

BTW - he is a great guy. He sold out of the ones he listed here, but it sounds like his boss gets a lot of them. Plus he is in you area (just south of LA) so if you want his contact info, PM me.

Surplus Harding medchest 3 are my go to boxes. Make your own dividers on the cheap with corrugated vinyl or plastic sheeting to keep things organized.

I got on that deal the last time he had some! Picked up two, but now I need one more. I keep checking eBay occasionally to see if he posts more for sale.

I just ordered a Daken box for my rack build. It was impossible to find a box in the size I was looking for. It was cheaper to order and ship from the UK than any box I found state side.
