Insurance For Vans

Since I started this thread I have found coverage up to $25,000 as an "RV". I just submitted what i felt it was worth and they covered it for a year based on that replacement number. I also had a little trouble with the vin as it was originally an "ambulance" from the Ford factory. We'll see though if I actually have to make a claim.

Wow... just wow.
about an hour ago I got a call from my insurance brokers telling me that my nation wide insurance policy was cancelled at midnight last night.
they excuse they gave me a rather my broker was that I was secretly using my van in private insurance for commercial use.they claim the VIN number is tracing back to a commercial vehicle my insurance broker who is a very nice guy defended my situation saying I was using it for private use only and I had converted it to a camper / my motorcycle hauler. nationwide didn't want to hear any if ands or buts because the VIN number trace it back to previous use more than 3 years ago of commercial use.
what that means is alright I am on the road in Florida with no insurance second if I want to put insurance I have to go with commercial policy I'm paid double what I was paying for less coverage then they want to see a commercial business that the van will be insured under so nationwide go F yourself.

Rob don't insurance companies have to give you notice of cancellation, according to a timeline required by law, which gives you time to get other coverage?
Laws do vary by state, but I thought that this notice of cancellation period was a requirement, since most states require insurance by law.

Yea. That's nationwide. And you can count on all the rest being no better! At least it wasn't a result of a claim that they will worm their way out of!

So this means that any commercial vehicle can never be private again? Right! Ever hear of a lease/rental car going private?

I've been happy with Geico for several years, insuring a number of vehicles. I just insured our '01 E-350 12 passenger van with no questions asked about 2 months ago. It's not an ambo, but it's worth a shot. I have no idea whether they offer stated value policies or how they handle private vehicles previously registered as commercial.

I'll ask a local broker soon as I have another pay check :p
One good thing about 42 yrs old and a spotless record- rates are cheap...

I have USAA as my primary carrier and they farmed out the insurance to Progressive on my B190 because it is an RV so I don't know if it helps but I did a declared value of $15k for now and it cost me $375 a year for full coverage and towing with a $1000 deductible. When the 4wd conversion is done I will do an appraised value and am sure the price will skyrocket accordingly.

Progressive just quoted me $1,660 per year to insure my ambo. Is it me or is that way too much?

Seems nutz to me. Make sure you have it categorized correctly. Progressive is notorious for mis-categorizing vehicles. They might be thinking it is for commercial use. They did the same thing on my daughters Nissan Versa. She was driving it to work (she owns a salon) and they said it was for business use.

Lesson learned today. I've been working with a local broker to try and get my ambo on the road. I thought leaving it open and unlocked for her inspection would show that no- it's not secretly being used for commercial enterprise.

Instead she found a sticker I hadn't even noticed rating the rig at 11,000lbs. 500 over the limit that most insurance wanted to play with in NY. Awesome.

That leaves patching together a mounted (but not necessarily permanent) stove and a working faucet (but not necessarily a sink) to qualify for Progressive RV insurance which another broker couldn't get for me. ******!? At least they would do RV insurance without an RV tag I guess, that would require a toilet, and clean/black/grey water tanks.

I'll definitely be pursuing alternate avenues- stated/ stated value plans.
