Check out this trailer I found on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280163849671&fromMakeTrack=true

Looks like the owner has made some interesting modifications.

Anyone know an easy way to ship to a port in FL if I can convince the seller to ship?

The only place the Sankey is going legally in North America is Canada, and that's if it's more than 15 years old.

US, all trailer have to meet Federal standards, and the only way to do that for a used trailer is through a Registered Importer. Big $ if they will touch it at all.

Illegally it can be crated and sent LCL (Less than Container Load) from the UK to Florida no problem. Trailer Parts

For what it's worth, I've owned two Sankeys over the years. Both obviously originated outside the U.S. Both were purchased from individuals who had imported the trailers from Canada. I had no problem registering either with the California DMV. Since neither had any clear identifying serial number, the DMV generated numbered stickers and attached them to the trailers. As I recall, I paid a fee that was calculated based on purchase price.

There is just no reason to attempt to discuss the LEGAL import of trailers on this forum, this remains to be a sad circumstance in my opinion, when the true answers are out there. There are people who work in the industry of importing, and State and Federal departments who have responded to threads like this and this one, with valid information, only to find a later post is inaccurate in its attempt to dissuade a person to import from another country. Agenda? To bad really. I will refrain from future posts on these topics. Sorry for the loss of your time in reading this post.

Good luck with your search for a trailer.

Federal regulations make it's very illegal to take a vehicle apart, import it as spare parts and re assemble it for the purpose of on road use in the USA.

Some States allow you to make a vehicle out of parts and title it. But States do not regulate imports from foreign countries the Federal Government does. We are dealing with two different sets of regulations here.

Green's point illustrates the seperation of Federal and State regulations. The State doesn't care if a vehicle is legally imported or not. If they can run the VIN then most States will issue a Title.

In the case of home built trailers a State will issue a VIN. But it streaches the point when the home built trailer is in fact a previously manufactured trailer or re assembled trailer.

Is it worth importing a trailer illegally?
If you get caught you either have to export the trailer or pay to have it destroyed. In addition you have signed a legal document stating that the vehicle you are importing meets all Federal safety standards and regulations, so look at a fine as a minimum .

Is it worth importing a used military trailer financially?
Sankey trailers from Witham http://www.witham-sv.com/registered.php cost around $500.00 each. Crating $250.00, inland shipping to port $250.00, Less Than Container Load shipping $650.00, Customs clearance, bond and duty $250.00 a Total of $1900.00 plus inland trucking to the US destination.

This is correct is the trailer is less than 25yrs old. Many of the Sankeys available are the original 55 inch wide ones with no tailgate and the majority of these exceed the 25yr rule and can be legally imported with only a correctly completed DOT H7 form and normal customs paperwork.
If its over 25yrs old it can be imported- for verification call DOT import division
