Bought an 80 series LandCruiser yesterday from an electrician who had built a mobile satellite communications outfit for Clear Channel Satellite, paid for by WellPoint the healthcare giant. It was very expensive (one switch was $7Million) and is in a bulletproof pod and gets hoisted onto the back of a truck that can carry it anywhere to provide communication in case of natural disasters. They bought the very last Unimog in the USA on which to mount this equipment. Once it was built in Denver, it was driven to Manchester NH where it sits in a secure underground parking garage beneath a hospital. The truck is never driven unless there is an emergency which has not yet happened. The guy was driving from Denver to NH this weekend to do the yearly maintenance on both the electrical systems and the Mog, since he was the only one trained by MB to look after it for Clear Channel. He was replacing 5 routers in the system with new routers at the cost of about $100k even though the original routers had never been used.
One of these days, that truck and its systems are going to become obsolete and I'm guessing it it will appear at an auction after spending it's life hidden in an underground garage. Who will be the lucky one to run across that auction?
