Intro and 3 Pieces of Camping Gear I Love

Howdy and greetings from the "Big Empty" -

I'm Ed Newell from Lander, WY. I'm the county prosecutor here and feel lucky to have come upon such an informative site. My "expedition vehicle" is a 2000 Ford crew cab F250 with the V10 motor. It's been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Aside from poor fuel mileage (10 - 13 mpg), I have no complaints. I spend a fair amount of time camping in the "Red Desert" near Lander. I also enjoy riding my Kawasaki 650 quad locally and at Moab.

Here are a few pieces of camping gear that have proven to work for me:

First, the Cabela's Outfitter Gear XWT-Extreme Weather Tent:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...parentType=index&indexId=cat602773&hasJS=true

I have the 10X10 version. I can set it up alone in about 30 minutes. It's plenty big for 2 guys and their gear. This thing is bomb proof and highly recommended. It handles wind, rain, and snow very well indeed.

Next is the "Cabela's Alaska Guide 4 Piece Cot Set": http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...parentType=index&indexId=cat602775&hasJS=true

I love this cot. It's easy to set up and hyper comfortable. The biggest challenge is keeping my lab "Boomer" from sharing my sleeping space.

Finally, the ultimate in snivel gear, the "Big Buddy Heater": http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...arentType=index&parentId=cat280026&id=0027876

I keep a 5 gallon tank outside the tent and route the hose through a window. This heater will keep my tent toasty in temps down to about 15 degrees. I haven't used it in colder weather so I can't comment on its capabilities in the arctic. It works fine at 8000 feet and has a low oxygen sensor rendering it safe for use inside the tent.

Thanks again for the wonderful site and best regards, ELN.

Wow...and I thought I was cold camping when it hit 28˚. :REOutCampFire03:
I admit it, I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to cold. I need :campfire: or :sunny:

The "Red Desert" is an awesome place to knock around. Unfortunately, it can be a "little chilly" at night - even in the summer. There's nothing quite as miserable as shivering through a long, cold night. The "Cabela's Ultimate Adam and Eve" sleeping bag keeps me plenty warm: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...&parentType=index&indexId=cat20144&hasJS=true

It's rectangular cut and allows plenty of room for my size 11 feets. I run the Big Buddy just before bed and before emerging from the bag in the morning. Perfect!

Best regards, ELN.

Welcome to Expo!

I passed through a few months ago and spent the night in Lander. Is the Red Desert south of town?

Thanks John. Yes, the Red Desert is south of Lander. It's a huge area - basically high desert. My favorite spots tend to be BLM lands abutting the southern end of the Wind River Range. Find yourself a nice aspen grove and plop down for a few days. Plenty of deer, antelope, coyotes, and other critters to watch and thousands of miles of two-track to explore. Best regards, ELN.

Welcome to ExPo Ed!

I am spoiled, too -- I have the Buddy Heater. I love it. It works great in every place I have been except this past summer when we stayed in northern New Mexico at Goose Lake. It was around 11,000 feet, though. I would start it and it would last only 5 minutes or so. I suspect the altitude made the O2 sensor interpret the oxygen level as too low. I couldn't argue, but when I woke up, I'd fire it up again. 5 minutes of heat made a huge difference in whether I felt like getting out of my sleeping bag! LOL

Just ordered the same bag. I hope it works out well for our Death Valley trip between X-Mass and New Years.

great into ED,,,, almost sounds like a cabelas commercial.

It sure does! Let me tell you my Cabela's story: My well used Cabela's Alaska Geodisic Dome Tent blew out the front door zipper a couple years ago. Knowing that it was long out of warranty, I called Cabela's asking if anything could be done. The call-taker asked that I return the tent for a look by the Cabela's staff. To make a long story shorter, Cabela's gave me a full store credit for the original cost of the tent I had used for almost 10 years. Yup, I drink the Cabela's koolaid! Best regards, ELN.
