Introduction post - aussie canter budget build

Hey guy's, been reading through the forums and thought it would be worthwhile introducing myself.

Recently bought an old canter after outgrowing the single cab ute. Planning to do a year long lap of aus departing in March 2020.

Build is about as budget as it gets and probably a little different but thought you guys might appreciate it.

1991 mitsubishi canter 4x4 (anyone able to clarify the model). Running super singles and a seccond hand aluminium canopy.

Mods that are currently underway include water tank, solar, 12v system in camper. Still reaserching winch, air compressors and a snorkel.

Looking forward to soaking up some of the abundance of knowledge and maybe running into some fellow members out on my travels!

Cheers Josh

One thing that you seriously need to consider is insulation of the inside of the canopy. If you don't, I expect it will be raining on the inside from all of the condensation. This could also lead to serious mold issues too.
Covering the inside with something like marine carpet is one possible way to go, but that box is one big cold bridge.

The first time we camped in the canopy on the back of the ute we were wet as till we put carpet on the roof made one hell of a difference and the couple of times we have been in the truck with out the pop top up it condensates badly so you need a bit of air flow as well have a 24 volt ARB twin cylinder compressor on the camper but brought a cheap Kings twin cylinder one for $140 for in the ute to use around the farm the salesman said see if you can kill it seams ok so far have a Warn 15000 lb winch on the back to pull my self out of trouble rather than further in , Isuzu came with a snorkel but for the fresh air intake for the camper I used 75 mm PVC storm water pipe and no have not added up the invoices for the final cost the wife doesn't want to know

Your basic camper is Great. Just one thing you should really have your bed at the rear because that is lighter than your storage setup. This would put your weight in front of the rear axle where it should be for a better ride and Canter loading reconmendation by manufacturer. Now it will make the front porpoise because of the tail end weight. Other way would be to build water and extra fuel tanks in the space in front of the box and mount the spares on top of them.

Looking Good,
Dan.

Mate, She's a ripper, reminds me of a small Japanese apartment :)

Agree with the other comments plus don't forget bug screens for those big side doors, or a mozzie net over the bed. A 12v fan will be invaluable as well.

What material did you use for the cupboards?

Cheers Steve

Cheers mate, had this drama in the previous build, just crack the windows these days (luckily they've got bug nets built in, the carpets a good idea, definitely gonna look into it!

Thanks mate I didn't realise 24v compressor definitely gotta save up to buy anything from arb but I've heard only good things about their compressors. The rear winch is a great idea, does it sit in a cradle? Any photos?

Definitely agree mate, not ideal but i wanted to maximise the use of the back door and design the kitchen around it. Going to use the water, fuel, tools and spare tyre to offset the rear weight (most of which is clothing and cooking). Loving reading through all your old posts and watching the videos of your canters in action!

Gonna try for a magnetic bug screen to go over a door or two. 12v fan is definitely essential, I'll be reusing one from previous ute.

The cupboards are actually from IKEA, made out of cardboard with some sort timber/laminate outer layer, great on weight and cheaper then the materials to build something custom!

Really appreciate all the input blokes! Will be sure to update with more photos in the coming days!
