Last weekend, Best Buy lowered its prices for the iPad 2 by $50. That's a pretty good sign that a new iPad is on the way.

I am definitely excited about the release, and looking forward to the new features. Hopefully they can increase the compatibility issues that the Ipad currently has such as no flash or java. Those things annoy the heck out of me when trying to use certain websites.

Weds March 7

Apple has sent out invitations to an event Wednesday, March 7 in San Francisco. The invitation contained a partial photo of an iPad. So all will be revealed in a week.

Amid the rumors of high resolution display, faster processor, better camera, SIRI voice recognition, and 4G LTE data modems for the iPad 3, here's one I have not heard before: Microsoft Office for iPad.

Microsoft has long provided versions of Office for Macintosh computers. More than 50 million iPads have been sold, and virtually all of Microsoft's enterprise and education customers support the iPad. Maybe it's time for Microsoft Office for iPad.

Microsoft Office apps could provide a big boost to Skydrive, Microsoft's cloud storage and file sharing initiative. Microsoft Office apps on the PC platform can use Skydrive. A Skydrive app for iOS is already available in the iTunes store, alongside Microsoft's Bing music service, OneNote note-taking app, and Messenger.

We'll know for sure on Wednesday morning.

That's great. I'll have to get Office if there isn't some stupid limitation to iPad3 or similar.

I'll be interested to see if the memory of the next iPad will be larger than the iPad2's 512MB. A program like Excel or Word would have to reduce the feature set to play nicely in 512MB (along with iOS and the screen buffer). And would require lots of swapping of program and data in and out of memory, making for sluggish performance. If the next iPad gets 1 GB of RAM, then Excel or Word would have a lot more room to play in.

There are two ways to use the Microsoft Office apps on your iPad today.

First is to use a remote desktop app, a program that allows your iPad to show you what's happening on a remote PC. Examples include Log Me In Ignition and Go To My PC. Disadvantages of this approach are that you have to own a PC and the Microsoft Office application you wish to use, and the PC has to be turned on and connected to the Internet.

Second is Onlive Desktop, a service that has Windows-compatible servers and Microsoft Office available for you to access over the Internet. You don't need a PC, and you don't need a copy of Windows of your own. The iPad app and 2 GB of online storage is free. Service plans are available for more storage. http://desktop.onlive.com

Both these approaches depend on fast Internet service to be most useful. I doubt they would work well over a 3G connection.
