Apple introduced the original iPhone in late June, 2007, only six years ago. Today, more than a billion smartphones* from many manufacturers are in use today. That's 1 smartphone for every 7 people alive today. Smartphones in use will reach 2 billion by 2015. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-...se-surpass-1-billion-will-double-by-2015.html

Can you think of any other technology that was adopted at such a rapid pace? Makes me wonder what the next six years will bring.

(*For me, a smartphone is a pocket-size computing device with access to mobile voice, SMS and data services. A smartphone can store and run application software and related data. A smartphone has a touchscreen, 5+ hours of battery life, a digital camera, the ability to capture and display digital photos and videos, play digitized music, and navigate using signals from GPS satellites. Perhaps most important, the smartphone permits access to its application programming interfaces, allowing third party software developers to create applications for the device.)
