Iron Butt questions

I cut it so close on money that when I left Tulsa to return to Denver I only had enough money for gas. My "meals" for that ride consisted of a cup of coffee in Hutchinson, KS, and a candy bar and soda in Burlington, CO. I arrived home with $1 in my pocket. :Wow1:

In my defense, I was 22 and didn't know any better! :p

Yep, I've done that too, but mine was on an old beater CL360. :bike_rider: At least it was in Florida so I didn't have to deal with it being cold!

Sometimes I wonder how we survived our youth!

I did the Ironbutt Saddle Sore 1000 several years ago. I don't understand why some of you are so negative on the idea... if it makes you happy do it. Having done it once I haven't a desire to do it again. I regularly put down 700 to 800 mile days. I try to knock off big mileage getting to where I want to ride, then take my time seeing what I came to ride, i.e. to get to northern Ca. from here there is a lot of ****ty desert to cross - 510 miles of I-80 to Reno just to get out of the desert.

I thought I'd pass on a link to the original poster of the write up I did of my ride.

There might be some info in there that is useful. Have fun, take time to smell the roses, and be careful.

Thank you so much for the link to your ride report. My plan is to do a couple of 400-500 mile rides to sorta get used to it and see if this is something I really wish to persue. I dont think I want a licsense plate frame or sticker I just want to mark it off of my list, to say I've done it. Thank you all very much for the info and tips.

Just talked to a guy that went 8000 miles in 6 days. YIKES. Pittsburgh to Seattle and back (with his wife behind him on the seat) This was over this 4th July. WOW serious Iron ***
His maiden voyage with a the IB guys was a "Great Lakes ride" on a Honda 90. He went around ALL the lakes!!!!

I rode my Honda XR650L from Chattanooga, TN to Natchitoches, La (~650 miles) through Tropical Storm Fay while wearing a motorcross style offroad helmet, does that count for anything other than dumb?

And that was after riding over 400 miles the day before, which included Deals Gap ("Hwy 129 "The Tail of the Dragon") and the Cherohalah Skyway.

It's all about attitude and your willingness to be a geezer on a bike.

And yes, I did Deal's Gap on knobbies, and gave the photographer the ADV Salute.
