Can you post up some pictures and more detail - essentially " the hub is loose": where/how/why?

I will post some tomorrow, the rain didn’t let me work on it this morning. I will make a video describing the issue and show the play

Looks like work took over my weekend so some day next week I’ll jump into the discovery. I did order a new set of inner lock washers for the wheel bearings, when those come in I plan to swap those out at the very least. I will mostly likely just wait until those arrive to start digging into the issue anyways so I don’t have to take it apart twice in a week.

Wheel wobble update. I am putting together a YouTube video that will go over the repair and show the wobble I was talking about in the wheel.

After pulling the locking nuts out to inspect the installed lock washer and inner washer the inner washer was in fact on of the lock washers. The inner washer (stub axle washer) is much thicker and has a larger outside diameter. I think the cause of the wobble was from the wrong thinner washer flexing when tightened which caused gapping once the river was in motion. After installing the new inner washer the hubs stay tight and there is no wobble. The wobble in the steering wheel is minimal which is a night and day difference from before. I feel any remaining wobble I can chalk up to wear and tear items that still need to be replaced such as tie rod ends etc. Another idea that could be contributing to the remaining shake while driving is the uneven wear on the tires from the wobble.

Anyways! After buttoning up the wheels I was going to do a tire rotation but I decided to pull the spare, since I will be integrating it into my rotation anyways, and painted it black. Over the next few weeks I will rotate a wheel out at a time to paint them. I also snuggled up the alternator belt, with the recent cold it’s been slipping a lot. Tomorrow morning I will top off the transmission and possibly knock out a few more little projects.

Cynical old bastard
A disco steel looks good in black. I've been threatening to do mine for 8 years

The alternator belt is a pita. It should be 10mm wide and 605mm long. A 10A0605C, but ETC 7469 is usually 10A0617C, which just seems to stop the belt staying tight enough

I don’t know why it took me so long to commit to painting the wheels. It give the rig a totally different look in a good way!

I never re adjusted the main belt after putting it on, so I readjusted it and when I did that I did not readjust the alternator belt. It seems to slack up a bit more then the main belt. I’ll check out the size. But a little snug adjustment once in a blue moon keeps it from slipping. Seems to get worse in the cold

Trip Report

Had a nice little cruise through Pisgah National Forest yesterday with my wife, puppy, Adam (with the LR4) and a few of his kids. We headed up to North Carolina on HWY 25 where we made our way to Green River RD just south of DuPont state forest. Green River RD is a dirt road that runs south of pinnacle mtn rd and it’s just a nice and easy little off-road stretch that bypasses driving up Caesars Head. From the end of green river rd we headed towards Brevard where we stopped for a quick lunch and Corky’s, which was pretty good food but it was a bit heavy and greasy to put down before a bunch of driving.

After lunch we headed up 276 to Pisgah and turned right shortly after the ranger station. The forest roads were very easy going but the views and the weather was perfect which made for a really nice day of exploring. After running our first dirt road we ended up near the Blue Ridge Parkway and decided to head down to East Fork which is one of Adams favorite camping spots. We took a quick hike down to the river and enjoyed some beautiful weather with some even better views! After playing on the rocks for a bit we headed back up 276 to Pisgah where we took the other side of the Pisgah look back to Brevard. We passed by the glassy rock climbing area which looked awesome! Hoping to make it out there for some climbing in the near future. We then made our way further down where we stopped at sliding rock falls which was a quick hike up to the top where we all decided to give our heads a quick dip. The water was pretty dang cold but very refreshing!

The falls pretty much wrapped up out trip in Pisgah, we headed back home afterwards.

In the coming weeks I will have some updates coming for some repairs. I’ve got a leaking power steering hose which is ordered and on the way and that’s just the beginning. As the weather starts to warm up and I can ride the motorcycle into work more I will start tackling some more projects.

Have a bit of a big update!

Last Thursday I picked up a new (to me) Range Rover!

No I will not be getting rid of the disco, it is not going anywhere. In fact quite the opposite. Having another vehicle gives me the opportunity to spend more time on some of the projects I need to do on the discovery with out rushing them or holding off on them due to the need of a vehicle.

That being said….
This is a 2012 Range Rover HSE, 169k miles and in pretty dang good shape. I picked it up for a whopping $5500. It is in no way perfect but it’s going to pick up a lot of the camping and traveling in the next year as I dig inito the disco. It will also be my daily (along with the motorcycle).

Over the next 2 weeks I will be swapping the roof top tent over to the range Rover and prepping it for longer distance trips. The discovery will start being geared more towards the off-roading side where as the Range is for creature comforts and well…traveling, which is where the disco most certainly does not shine. This morning I installed the proud rhino 2.5” lift rods as well as wheels and tires from a new gen defender. I’m waiting for the gap tool to come in and a new map sensor which brought up a fault code the day after I brought it home (typical Rover). I do fully intend to have to work out a few maintenance issues on the Range Rover but I’m hoping it will be a decent buy.

Anyways, here are some photos. The first few are from when I brought it home, and the last few are from this mornings install.

I suggest you start a new thread for the Range Rover. It would be nice to see another L322 getting out and about.

I most likely will, I don’t with all the work and stuff that’s going to be going on with the disco I don’t want to clog it up or over power it with the Range Rover.

Nice D1!

I'm a fan but can't have two trucks and fear the D1 is just too small... Always loved them, however. A true icon.

I totally understand that. If I weren’t kid free and had a decent yard space it would be very difficult to own. I’ve been working up to getting a second vehicle for some time now being that it’s just not a good daily and have finally made that happen.

Yesterday afternoon I got to attend a recovery workshop though Venture Unknown! It was a great experience an I learned a heck of a lot of really good information. Being most of my time is spent on pretty mild forest roads with the occasional nitty gritty stuff I’ve skimped out on a lot of the recovery stuff, knowledge and gear alike. Being that I want to start gearing the disco more for the gnarly..er off-roading I felt it was a good time to take the class and start my journey of doing things the right way lol. That being said the class was about a 4 hour class with great information and practice setups. I will be working on slowly building’s recovery kit to transfer between rigs.

I did not get any photos of the class so I just took a few stills from the video, but I will be putting a video out on my YouTube channel. It won’t be very informative, just some clips the wife got while we were out there.
