Prices are coming full circle with Expedition roof top tents. Years ago you would order your tent and the manufacturer would build it to your specifications and they were very very expensive. I found Zifer, AutoHome brand, back in the mid-90's this way. Tried an experiment and started building hand made Italian tents in numbers designed for North American conditions. I was able to talk US customs into granting us a 2.5% tariff rate. Then did some test marketing and was surprised by the demand. My background was supply chain design and costs were very low so we could afford to sell a hand made Maggiolina for less than $1K. We were able to use a freight imbalance off the West Coast to ship tents across the country for $100 to $200.
I think what we are seeing is that this model isn't feasible today. We are back to ordering hand made tents to your specifications that are very very expensive.
