Is it impossible to find an FJ47 Troopie?

Hey all you Cruizer guys,

I am a Jeep owner, but have to admit, I really like the FJ47's (or long body FJ45's), but they seem impossible to find. I think they would make an AWESOME expedition rig. I'm leaning right now to a NAS Defender 110, but have read several people saying that the Land Cruisers are more mechanic friendly, or have parts more readily available around the world.

Forgive me for my questions that are admittedly uninformed...that's why I'm on the portal right??

  1. Is there a US Legal variant of the FJ47, or were they limited to overseas sales.
  2. Were they produced in exceedingly low numbers/
  3. Or are people just snatching em up and holding onto them forever?
  4. Is there a site to find these for sale anywhere in the US? (I looked last night and came up with nada...)
  5. Do you have to go overseas and play the import game?
Any advice would help!!

Andy,
What's the difference(s) between a 45 and 47?

I guess we should stop the hijack and answer James' questions....

The HJ47 is the diesel, 2H naturally aspirated.

So:

Is there a US Legal variant of the FJ47, or were they limited to overseas sales.

Yes, anything over 25 years old is eligible for legal import into the US; however, the FJ/HJ Troopys were never sold in the US.

Were they produced in exceedingly low numbers/Or are people just snatching em up and holding onto them forever?

No, they are common in the Middle East and Australia, as well as many other places. The ones that make it into the US are usually owned by eccentric Land Cruiser owners who don't part with them easily.

There are importers. Sites like Outback Imports, Vintage Off Road and the like do importing. There are numerous ways this is done, so I'd highly recommend that if it is your first FJ, you do extensive homework, and include a pre buy trip to see the rig in person.

Do you have to go overseas and play the import game?

No, but I will likely buy and import my own 78 series troopy in the future, when the 25 year mark includes those models. You just have to do a lot more homework, and set up brokers, shipping, and a family trip to OZ to look at trucks!

Hope that helps!

BTW...reserve on the Troopy (owned by Warn), is supposedly $40K.

Not too bad if you ask me...as that's what I've told a prospective buyer I would take for mine....:smiley_drive:

I have worked and owned several of these and yes they came in 2H and 2F flavors. They are becoming more main stream, but still pretty rare.

Like hltopper has said you gotta pay the price or import your own. Middle East, Panama, and Australia probably have the most abundant stock of Troopies.

My next expodition build is going to be a HJ47. Seen here http://toymoco.com

Here are some pics of my old troopy I sold to TJDIV

I would love to find one of these and send it to the team at TLC ICON and let them build the vehicle that dreams are made of!

Either that or find a NAS Defender 110 and send it to the team at East Coast Rovers and do the same.

Well, as long as we are dreamin, how about 1 of each??

Rodney, it's great to see you over here. Welcome.

Bear, check out Global Classic Imports. The owner is John Bailey and an honest guy to deal with. He got my my HJ45 from OZ. and like Hilltopper, I too will be getting a 70 series next. This time, however I will be going there (OZ) in person to pick it out. Not because I don't trust John, but for the experience and vacation.

Cheers
