Is it worth upgrading the city navigator

I have been using the city navigator 2007 on my 60Cs for years, wondering if its worth the $100 to upgrade to the 2010 version?

That's a subjective thing... FWIW, I've not upgraded my City Navigator for my 60Cx since something like 4 years now. I find that I don't miss much, simply because the road system in most places is relatively static. There are newer developments and such where I miss not having the current streets, but of course even if you update to the latest maps there's no guarantee to what they've actually added.

For me, $100 is way too much for the small benefit I'd get from upgrading. Also because Garmin limits how many GPSs you can install it on, I'll wait until my next handheld upgrade before I consider sinking money into another license.

Garmin could do a lot better when it comes to their map & map upgrade costs.

I had a long talk with a Garmin representative 2 years ago regarding this and discovered that they do not own the rights to the mapping information in City Navigator. They do own the rights to the topo maps (in Canada at least) which is why I can install the topos on multiple gps and SD cards but can only update
my Nuvi with the lastest maps in City navigator.:coffee:

One think I discovered when I upgraded my Nuvi 200W was that the older GPS couldn't fit all of the new data in it. I had to choose which section of the country to leave out.

Funny you should ask.

I literally just contemplated this exact situation not three weeks ago. I also, have a 60CS, I wanted to upgrade my maps. So I did some research and found after talking with Garmin, they will not be making another update after the current version that is available, which is 2009.

The 60CS' replacement model (60CSx) is compatible with the new version of software (City Navigator NT) They have decided to go with this new software because they way the device reads and stores the information, it can store more info with less space used.

I however, really like my CS and it still works flawlessly, so i decided to keep it. I bought the 2009 update and will use it until I feel it is time to upgrade.

I was concerned that the 56mb of memory our unit has would be insufficient to fit enough maps but this was no issue at all. (for me of course)

I hope this helps and maybe answers some questions for you. When searching for the update, Garmin does have it for $100 but when I did a Google search, I found it for $70 with free shipping.

After posting the question i did some research and decided to go with the topo 24k maps. They have very current offroad trails, which is mostly what i use my gps for and the best thing is that even the trails are routable. On top of that it also contains the streets and highways similar to the navigator. The only downfall is that I have the 60CS which only has 56mb and the topo maps are very memory intensive so I can only load small portions at a time. Overall I think it is a good compromise.
